Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited
Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC), Japan,
has 74 percent stake in its Indian subsidiary, Suzuki
Motorcycle India Private Limited (SMIL). SMIL marks
Suzuki's re-entry into the Indian two-wheeler market
after it severed ties with partner TVS in 2000-01. Suzuki
was the technology provider in the erstwhile joint venture
company TVS Suzuki.
On the eve of its second foray into the Indian market,
Suzuki has to embark on a brand-building exercise to
project its new avatar of a wholly owned motorcycle-manufacturing
subsidiary. Notwithstanding Suzuki's status of a global
motorcycle giant, in India it is better known as a car
manufacturer courtesy the successful JV with Maruti.
Suzuki has invested Rs. 200 crores to bankroll its India
operations and a major chunk of the amount has been
utilized in setting-up a state-of-the-art manufacturing
plant in Gurgaon.
