A Closer Look At The BMW X7 - The First 7-seater SUV Of BMW

BMW has revealed its first 7-seater SUV, the X7 at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. The model is developed based on the X7 iPerformance concept which made its debut at Frankfurt motor show last year.

The BMW X lineup has been a great success all over the world for their luxury, advanced technologies and impressive performance. The BMW X7, once launched, is the largest SUV and is also the first three –seat-row SUV by the German carmaker. The SUV’s design will be based on the X series model but will take a more impressive road presence than its older siblings. Let’s have a closer insight into the BMW X7, the flagship product of the luxury German car manufacturer in terms of its exterior, interior, performance, etc.

1. BMW X7 Exterior

Dimensions

As mentioned before, being the first 7-seater BMW SUV, the BMW X7’s design will bear some resemblance to other SUVs in the SUV X-range, but with greater dimensions. The new X7 will be 5,151mm long; 1,990mm wide; 1,805mm high and a 3,105mm wheelbase, which translate into a greater length by 9mm in comparison with the X6 and just shorter than the standard wheelbase 7-series sedan by 3 inches. The top variant X7 will come with a 7-seat or 6-seat layout. Boot space will measure 326 litres, which can be expanded to 740 litres when the third row folded, and even as much as 2,120 litres with the two last seat rows folded.

Exterior features

In the front, the X7 is expected to feature the largest-in-BMW-history kidney-like grille with a boxier design. The polishing LED headlamps will be positioned to the sides of the grille. These headlamps, which will be offered across all variants of the BMW X7, can be switched over to the optional laser-tech ones to provide twice the throw as the normal LED lamps. In the rear, the X7 will get most of its design cues from the X lineup with the newly-designed LED tail lamps, defoggers, fashionable spoilers, and the BMW X7 badge. All of these features will contribute to the X7’s appealing and premium appearance on road.

Overall, the BMW X7 is expected to offer the passengers a comfortable, safe and entertaining travel experience

Space and seating

The all-new BMW X7 is the first 7-seater SUV from the German automaker. The middle row will be equipped with personal comfort seats, while the third row is claimed to offer unparalleled comfort with central armrest, cup holders and adjustable seats.

Interior features

To optimize the comfort of the passengers during travel, the German carmaker also equips its vehicle with a wide range of top-notch interior features including

  • 12.3-inch twin displays

  • Ambient lighting

  • Three-piece panoramic glass roof

  • Four-zone temperature control

All of the above features are standard features. Moreover, other optional features are also on offer, comprising of

  • Five-zone temperature control

  • Entertainment features for the rear seats with glass application

  • Bowers & Wilkins diamond-surround system

Braking and safety

In terms of braking system, the X7 SUV will be equipped with disc brakes on all wheels. Braking efficiency can be further enhanced with the ABS and emergency brake assist.

As regards safety, the BMW X7 will ensure the passengers a safe travel experience with an impressive list of safety features including

  • Surround airbags for the front seats

  • Curtain airbags for the second and the third row

  • Airbags for the driver’s knees

  • Pedestrian protection

  • Driving alert system

3. BMW X7 Performance

The engine options on offer include two petrol and one diesel unit. The SUV will be available in four variants: the petrol xDrive40i and xDrive50i, and the diesel xDrive30d and M50d. The petrol variants will receive the power from two engine options: a 3.0L 6-cylinder inline and a larger 4.4L twin-turbo V8. While the former can produce 335bhp, the latter is good for 456bhp. On the other hand, the diesel variants will be powered by only a 3.0L inline engine but can churn out two states of tunes: 265bhp and 400bhp for the lower and higher tunes, respectively. A hybrid version can also be introduced, though still not confirmed by BMW.

All of the three motor options can be paired with a standard 9-speed AT unit through an all-wheel-drive system. Nevertheless, the BMW X7 can spread all of its power to the rear wheels when required.

Moreover, the BMW X7 is expected to be offered with two packages of driving: Dynamic Handling and Off-road, which allows it to offer an electronically adjustable limited-slip gear differential at the rear.

Four driving modes will be further provided with the Off-Road package further: xGravel, xSnow, xRocks and xSands, which can be adjusted, depending on the demography.

 

4. BMW X7 Price and Competitors

The new X7 SUV will be built at the factory of the company in South Carolina, USA. The car is expected to be globally launched next year; its deliveries are projected to start in March 2019.

The German automaker has not made any official confirmation as to the X7’s Indian launch. But if this becomes a reality, the launch date is anticipated to take place in the latter half of 2019. Its introductory price is likely to be over Rs 1 crore (ex-showroom). Once launched, it will directly take on the likes of other vehicles in the same segment like Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mercedes GLS, Land Rover Discovery.
