Having a better understanding of aspects that aftermarket parts versus manufacturer car parts will help you choose a part that fits your car most. Read the following to find out the pros and cons of each option.

When your car needs to be taken to a repair shop after a collision, one of the things that might concern you most is the difference between aftermarket parts and manufacturer car parts. Which one is better?  Most of us assume that OEM parts are better; however, aftermarket parts are still a quite common choice.  In reality, both of them have their own advantages and disadvantages. Here is what you should know about the differences between aftermarket parts and OEM parts to choose which one fits your car most.

1. Aftermarket Parts

When you take your car to an independent mechanic shop for repair after a collision, it is likely that you will be given aftermarket parts. These components are mostly made by other companies or manufacturers rather than the original ones.

Almost all of the aftermarket parts are less expensive than OEM parts. However, you get what you pay for. Cheap replacement parts often have a lower quality. Therefore, if you have time, shop around or ask mechanists or your relatives for a good advice. By doing so, you still can find quality replacement car parts meanwhile still saving your money.

Besides, there is a wide range of aftermarket parts in independent repair shops. This means that you can easily choose parts that fit your car most and get the work done more quickly. However, in some cases, you might get overwhelmed by tons of available replacement parts in the repair shop. In this case, a trustworthy auto technician or a well-experienced relative or friend might be your lifesaver. With his/her support, you can narrow down your choices and find the most suitable and affordable parts.

Furthermore, unlike OEM parts, aftermarket ones usually come with no warranty. This is also an aspect that you should take into consideration.

2. OEM Parts

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer, which is quite a self-explanatory name. You will be given choices for OEM parts when you take your car to an authorized dealership for repair or replacement.

Most of OEM parts have better quality than aftermarket parts

Although OEM parts are more expensive than aftermarket ones, most of OEM parts offer a high quality and consistency. In some cases, when your car comes with aftermarket replacement parts that are inconsistent and lower quality, it will cost you more in the long run as you might have to replace them more than once. Besides, you will find the peace of mind when using OEM parts that come with a warranty.

OEM parts are often offered by dealerships. Besides, you can also buy them from other sources such as online wholesalers, car accessories websites or other local repair shops. By doing so, it may take you longer to order OEM parts due to their limited availability. However, you will easily choose your right OEM parts without worrying much about the quality of different brands and prices with limited options.

It depends. If you have little time and limited knowledge of car replacement parts, or you have a tight budget, you can get advice from your trustworthy auto technician in the repair shops to find decent aftermarket parts.
