The design of the new Renault Kwid will surely turn a lot of heads. While the old model wasn’t ugly in any way, it surely was a little conservative. The big headlamps and the large grille, keep things classy and understated. The new model, however, doesn’t go for understated. Instead, it features a vertically split headlamp design like a many other modern SUVs (like Tata Harrier, MG Hector, and Hyundai Venue). No matter the occasion, the new Kwid will never fail to turn heads.

The side profile remains unchanged save for the design of the alloy wheels. Where the previous model had diamond-cut alloys, the new one gets chrome-finished alloy wheels. The rear also remains virtually unchanged. The design of the taillights is the same, except for a different pattern of LEDs inside. Another small detail is the addition of small vertically-oriented reflectors. Most of the changes are done to the face of the car, and these changes have helped make the car look sleeker, sportier, and perhaps even exciting!

Exterior Dimensions

The new Renault Kwid is slightly longer and taller than the previous model but carries the same width. The wheelbase is also identical, although ground clearance is unnoticeably higher. Overall though, both a extremely compact cars.

Interior Design

Old Renault Kwid Interior Design

On the inside, the changes are more apparent. The design of the dashboard is slightly different. The instrument cluster has been updated and looks quite premium now. It also includes a tachometer now. The infotainment system also gets a larger screen, 8.0-inch compared to the 7.0-inch in the previous model. Also, the steering wheels has mounted controls now, for easier access.

The previous Kwid has lots of cubby holes in the cabin to store knick-knacks, and that trend continues in the new one. The AMT still gets a rotary dial controller in the centre console but has been repositioned to where a gear-lever usually is, thus improving the ergonomics of the car. Rest of the switchgear remains the same as before.

Interior Dimensions

In terms of interior space, there doesn’t seem to be any significant difference between the two models, although we can only be sure of that after a first ride review. On paper though, there seems to be a trade-off. The new Kwid has a lower boot space than the previous one by 21-litres.

Engine and Transmission

Renault Kwid offers two engine choices: a 0.8 and a 1.0-litre

The 2019 Renault Kwid is powered by the same 0.8-litre and 1.0-litre engines as the outgoing model. These are BSIV compliant at the moment, but will soon be upgraded to BSVI compliance. The 0.8-litre unit is good for 55 bhp and 72 Nm, while the 1.0-litre motor churns out 67 bhp and 91 Nm. Even the transmission options are unchanged. You get a 5-speed manual as standard on all trims, and a 5-speed AMT (Easy-R) is available only the 1.0-litre engine ‘RXT’ and ‘Climber’ variants, and now features a creep-forward function as well.

Safety Features

The Renault Kwid was a cheap, bare-bones vehicle, and as such wasn’t very impressive in the safety department. It featured Driver-side Airbag, Antilock Brakes, speed alert system, and front seatbelt reminder. The new Kwid gets all of the above with speeding alert and an optional front-passenger airbag. Crash-test ratings for the new vehicle aren’t available yet, but considering how poor the last one was, it can only be an improvement (probably).
