Renault India has just launched the newest entrant in the highly competitive and rapidly growing compact SUV segment with its Kiger. Renault Kiger vs Tata Nexon – Exterior Design

The Renault Kiger’s front-end follows the current trend of vehicle design trend with its vertically split headlamps, the winged radiator grille flanked by slim LED DRLs while the main triple barrel LED headlamp unit is mounted lower on the front bumper which also gets black skid plates for a rugged look. As mentioned above, The Nexon was given a mid-life refresh in early 2020 that saw a new front-end design language in which you get refreshed bumpers front and rear, new skid plates, and a new Tri-arrow design on the lower grille coupled with redesigned all-LED headlamps and fog lamps.

Over to the side, the Nexon has a distinct profile with its contrasting white beltline and flared wheel arches while the Kiger has a more rugged stance with its black cladding and squarish wheel arches. On the rear, the Kiger looks very squat with its pseudo lip spoiler on the boot lid and C-shaped LED taillights. Like the exterior, the interior of the Renault Kiger follows a more modern approach with its infotainment system fitted in a floating style on top of the dashboard which is also better for the driver as it falls in his field of vision. The Tata Nexon’s interior was refreshed during the facelift as well, getting a new steering wheel, same as the Nexon EV’s, new dashboard trim with more of the tri-arrow motif exterior, and new seat fabric. Its three-layered dashboard with soft-touch materials and textures gives a premium and airy feeling to the cabin. However, the Nexon gets a considerably smaller boot, offering 350 litres of storage space compared to the Kiger’s 405 litres.

The Tata Nexon comes with a full-digital TFT instrument cluster which replaced the older analogue dials. There’s a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with inbuilt Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Tata’s iRA-connected car tech, keyless go, cooled glove box, and auto climate control with Xpress Cool function.  The mid-life refresh also saw major additions in the features list with automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, tyre pressure monitoring system, cruise control, a sunroof, and ORVMs with auto-fold function.

Both compact SUVs are largely similar in terms of length, height, and wheelbase. The most noticeable difference being the Tata Nexon considerably wider than the Renault Kiger at 1811 mm vs 1750 mm. The Nexon also has a marginally higher ground clearance at 209 mm compared to the Nexon’s 205 mm.

The Renault Kiger is powered by a 1-litre petrol engine which comes in both naturally-aspirated and turbocharged forms. The 3-pot motor churns out 72 PS and 96 Nm peak power and torque in naturally-aspirated form. With the turbocharger, the engine makes 100 PS and 160 of max power and torque, though the latter figure drops to 152 Nm when you spec for the CVT gearbox. The Kiger can be had with either a 5-speed manual, a 5-speed AMT or a CVT.

The Tata Nexon gets the option of both petrol and diesel-engined variants. There’s a 1.2-litre turbo petrol which churns out peak power and torque figures of 120 PS and 170 Nm. The oil-burner is a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel making 110 PS and 260 Nm of max power and torque figures. Both engines can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed AMT.

The Renault Kiger is currently the cheapest compact SUV in the Indian market with a price range of Rs 5.45 lakh – Rs 9.55 lakh. Prices of the turbo variants of the Kiger Rs 7.14 lakh while the  CVT-equipped models are priced from Rs 8.60 lakh. The Renault Kiger also comes with the option of automatic trims with naturally-aspirated engine trims, with prices starting at Rs 6.59 lakh.

Prices for the Tata Nexon range from Rs 7 lakh, with the top trim coming in at Rs 12.79 lakh. The Nexon is available in over 30 variants to choose from across its trim levels, meaning there should be at least one variant that fits your requirements and price range.

Both of these compact SUVs make a very good case for themselves to buy them. If you want something that looks eye-catching and comes with all the modern features without burning a hole in your pocket, then the Renault Kiger is a very good choice, especially at its current introductory prices.
