David Ward, the GNCAP Secretary General, is very positive about the chance of a five-starred NCAP car that produced in India.

On the event of the Stop the Crash held in New Delhi recently, the Secretary General of the Global NCAP has shown his positiveness toward the upcoming of the first five-star India car on the safety test. Given the improvement in the recent test, he said it is likely that by the end of this year, there will be the first 5-star Indian car.

The NCAP test is the global standard on car safety. The first test in India is held in 2014, ever since, there is hardly any car that could reach the highest rate on this test. But admittedly, made-in-India cars have gone a long way from its start with more and more car to receive three and four stars on the NCAP test.

It is likely that there will the first five-star India car by the end of this year.

“We have seen extraordinary progress in the last year with a lot of significant cars coming in as two, three, four stars. We’re going to get some very good 4-star results. I think before the end of the year it’s quite likely we’ll see the first 5-star car.”

The Global NCAP has introduced its new set of tests, under which some Indian cars are examined. And the result is expected to be announced soon. It is likely that the result will give us the first 5-star rated model. However, the first 5-star car will be of the top-spec variants and not the base model as a full-star car requires a well-equipped safety feature package which is likely to be offered at the top-end trims.

Ward also added that:

“At the time of the 2018 Auto Expo, we announced a special ‘Safest Car For India’ award and for that, we want a vehicle that meets pedestrian protection norms, has ESC and five stars in our protocol. And we’re not saying for that it has to be the entry-level model because we want to incentivize somebody for getting this top award.”

The crash test has been taken by 23 made-in-India cars, which includes names like Maruti Suzuki Swift, Maruti Vitara Brezza, and Renault Lodgy. Recently, some Indian cars have received their result, for example, Hyundai i20 scores three stars, while the Swift failed with only 2 stars.

Receiving five stars score on the Global NCAP test will be an important mark for the Indian automobile industry.
