According to yearly sales data, Hyundai Elite i20 sells more than the more low-cost Hyundai Grand i10 in 2018.

Although it is the common knowledge that the more reasonably-priced models will record better sales than its costlier siblings. Nevertheless, for Hyundai, the second largest automaker in the country, the case seems to be the opposite: the Hyundai Elite i20 outsold the Hyundai Grand i10 in 2018.

As revealed by data published by SIAM, the total number of the Hyundai Grand i10 sold in 2018 was 1,34,249 units in comparison with 1,54,747 units in 2017. The figures for the Hyundai Elite i20 in 2018 and 2017 were 1,41,104 units and 1,34,103 units, respectively. The Hyundai Creta, the third best-selling model of Hyundai in 2018, experienced a breakthrough in the wholesales with 1,20,905 units sold in 2018 as compared to 1,05,484 ones in 2017.

As can be seen from the data above, Indian auto buyers are tending to opt for the Elite i20 instead of the cheaper Grand i10. The reason for this may be that the Grand i10 now seems to be outdated when compared with its direct competitors like the Maruti Swift. The Hyundai Elite i20, on the other hand, was facelifted in the first quarter of 2018 and now, still quite fully satisfy customers’ demand.

The new-gen Grand i10 is now being developed by Hyundai Motor India Ltd and is slated to go on sale in August 2019. The updated version of the platform which currently underpins the existing Grand i10 will be adopted for the next-gen model. The new vehicle will come with greater dimensions as well as the latest design of the company. Its engines will conform to the BSVI and it will also be equipped with more safety equipment across all variants.

In order to make the vehicle comply with the BSVI, Hyundai will use the 1.2L petrol motor which is a revised version of that in the current model to power the new-gen Grand i10. Considering the decreasing popularity of the diesel engine, Hyundai may exclude it from the engine options for the new vehicle. The transmission duties are undertaken by a 5-speed MT gearbox and a 5-speed Smart AT unit rather than the current 4-speed torque-converter auto.
