Maruti to Develop an All-electric Version of WagonR, First EV for Maruti

The biggest automaker in India – Maruti Suzuki – is building its new EV based on the Maruti Suzuki WagonR. It is expected to be launched by 2020.

The new Maruti WagonR is getting closer to its official launch in 2019. Besides, the soon-to-be-launch new WagonR, Maruti also have a plan on launching a new Maruti WagonR EV version.

As we all know, India is now all for the EVs. We have plan, norms, and law to guard an EV-dominated future. It seems that the automakers are starting to share the same vision, and many of them are rolling up their sleeves to develop their own electric vehicles. Or else, they might fall behind. Understandingly, India’s biggest auto company will not let this EV waves interrupt their game. Maruti is getting started on building an EVs which is the electric version of the popular hatchback Maruti Suzuki WagonR.

Maruti is developing an all-electric model based on the Suzuki WagonR 

At MOVE Global Mobility Summit in New Delhi, Maruti Suzuki has showcased their new EV. This model is developed on the ongoing Maruti Suzuki WagonR in Japan and underpinned by the lightweight Hearttect platform. The WagonR already comes with a hybrid engine.

The displayed EV WagonR is actually built at Gurugram plant. In fact, the production of this EV has been done at many plants of the Maruti all around India. They are all under rigorous testing phase to make sure the new EV will be refined and as reliable as possible, as any other gas-powered car from Maruti. For this one thing, we can surely trust Maruti.

Maruti Suzuki's EV Roadmap

Maruti is not the only early-comer in the segment of EVs, in fact, many other companies are gearing up in the EV race. Toyota has Hyundai is also planning on launching the Hyundai Kona EV in India, Tata with the new Tata Tigor EV, Mahindra with the e20 which has ready been out in the market. Just within years, we will welcome tons of new EVs and this is going to be the bread-and-butter segment of the automobile industry.

Maruti will collaborate with Suzuki on developing the new EVs. Toyota with their experience as one of the first auto carmaker to enter the hybrid segment will give the technical support to Maruti. The battery is developed in-house, hoping to keep the price competitive.

Maruti WagonR EV displayed at MOVE Global Mobility Summit comes with the dual charging port. One for is for normal housing electric input, another is for the charging at EV charging stations. Maruti WagonR EV has confirmed to launch the EV by 2020.
