Maruti XL6 Introduction

Understanding the potentialities of the premium MPV segment in India, the Indian largest auto manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki has decided to launch of the Maruti XL6 on August 21 this year. Despite borrowing the lightweight fifth-gen flexible and intuitive Heartech platform from the Maruti Ertiga, this new MPV will be sportier and more fashionable than its donor model. Although the premium MPV is largely speculated to be named the Maruti Ertiga Cross, numerous sources have confirmed that it will be called the Maruti XL6, which indicates its 6-seater layout.

The Maruti XL6 will be sold through the Nexa premium dealerships, which are well-known for their excellent buing experience. The dealers have insisted that the XL6 should be sold via their current 363 outlets. This will help promote the sale of the new model, which is expected to become the best seller in Nexa dealerships. The new MPV is expected to be offered with numerous factory-backed modification options which will not suffer from any legal issues.

Above is some general information about the Maruti XL6. Read on to get a detailed XL6 review as regards its design, specifications and prices.

Maruti XL6 Review - Design

Overall design

Some of you may wonder: “Will the Maruti XL6 look like the Ertiga”. The answer is “No”. The new model will have its own identity and like other models retailed through the Nexa premium dealerships, it will even get the Nexa blue colour option.

The XL6 will be equipped with a flatter hood on the more upright nose. The brand-new trapezoidal grille will come with some chrome elements. Sharper automatic LED headlights will be integrated with LED DRLs and turn signals. While the Maruti Eritga is equipped with only halogen headlamps, the LED units on the XL6 will make the car have a much more premium appearance and provide the driver with much better visibility at night. Thicker and heavier bumpers in both front and rear will also be present on the new MPV. Moreover, the bumper portion will be redesigned to house the silver faux aluminium skid plates and rectangular fog lamps.

The Maruti XL6 will sport LED headlights instead of the halogen headlamps in the Maruti Ertiga.

Side profile

On the side profile, the intimidating black cladding on the wheel arches will extend to the side and the rear, which lends the MPV a muscular stance and a rugged appearance. Moreover, the XL6 is expected to run on black 15-inch alloy wheels and come with black components like wing mirrors on the higher trims. The XL6 will not come with a sunroof but it will get silver roof rails.

What we have known so far is that a Nexa sticker and an XL6 badge will be mounted to the rear while the tailgate will come with black treatment. Some other notable features of the rear of the Maruti XL6 will include a more muscular bumper and a spoiler which will be integrated to the roof.

Overall, with its own unique features, the Maruti XL6 will have its own identity and distinguish itself from the Ertiga. It will not fail to catch anyone’s attention on the road. With its modern, contemporary and sportier exterior design, the XL6 should be the inspiration source for the next-gen Ertiga.

Maruti XL6 Interior Review

Armed with a much more premium cabin, this is where the Maruti XL6 sets itself apart most from the Maruti Ertiga.

Overall design

Whereas the Maruti Ertiga's cabin comes with a two-tone black and beige paint scheme, the XL6 is expected to get an all-black one. The dashboard will also feature darker wooden bits. All of these give the cabin a sportier feel.

Seating layout

Firstly, while the Ertiga is a full 7-seat MPV, the XL6, as its name suggests, will be a 6-seat vehicle, allowing a 2+2+2 seat configuration. Additionally, the beige cabin of the former with the dashboard getting some faux wood components on the higher-spec trims will be substituted with an all-black one in the entry-level variant and a dual-tone one in the top-spec variant of the latter. While the second seat row on the Ertiga is a bench, that on the XL6 will consist of two captain seats. The XL6 interior will also come with more high-quality leather seat coverings to further distinguish itself from its sibling with leather-wrapped upholstery. Nevertheless, the space inside the XL6 is anticipated to be similar to the Ertiga.

Engine and transmission

The Maruti Ertiga keeps under its hood three motor options: one petrol engine and two diesel units. The  XL6, however, will be launched with only a BSVI-compliant 1.5-litre K15 Smart Hybrid petrol motor that can generate a maximum power of 105 PS and a peak torque of 138 Nm. The engine is likely to come with only a 5-speed MT unit at launch; a 4-speed torque converter will be introduced at a later date. Due to the XL6’s heavier weight, its claimed mileage will be possibly lower than that of its elder sibling.

Maruti XL6 Review Verdict

Despite being based on the Maruti Ertiga, the XL6 will have a unique and more aggressive appearance along with a more premium cabin. It is expected to be priced at a higher range than its donor model. The long-awaited MPV is projected to be launched in August before the festive season. The vehicle will help India's largest automaker penetrate more deeply in the fast-growing premium MPV segment and give Maruti’s Nexa dealership a boost in the aspect that they have been lacking. This new Maruti 6-seater MPV is expected to hold the leading position in terms of sales number in the Nexa outlets and also help these dealerships considerably upgrade its sales.
