MG Motors will start their business in India with the launch of their new SUV. IT will compete with the likes of Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson in the premium SUV segment.

MG’s first SUV is due to be launched in mid-2019. This SUV is based on the Baojun 530. MG also gives us enough hints about their first products in India market. Here are a few facts about this new SUV from the British automotive company.

1. MG SUV will a big boy with large dimensions

Size is one of the most important factors in the segment of SUV. A big SUV will provide a pronounced road presence and a spacious interior space, making it better looking and more practical as a people carrying vehicles. That’s why models in the SUV segment always aims to extend their sizes to add more appeal to the package. And MG’s SUV will not be an exception.

In fact, we could expect that MG SUV will be even larger than the ongoing Mahindra XUV500 and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and rivalling with its direct competitors like Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson in terms of dimension. Based on the Baojun, the SUV is likely to feature a low stance in order to appear sporty.

2. MG SUV will be the most connected vehicle in the segment 

MG Motors has done a decent job in developing their connectivity technologies to go along with their models. As what we have seen on the eRX5 or the Roewe Marvel X, MG promises to offer the Indian customers with a load of advanced connectivity. President and MD of MG India, Mr Rajeev Chaba, has revealed that their SUV would easily be one of the most connected cars in India at its launch. And to prove their words, recently, MG India has established the partnership with Cisco IoT and UNLIMIT which provides services in IoT. The collaboration is meant to develop highly-connected auto models for MG.

3. MG SUV will get a fully-loaded feature list

One of the make-or-break aspects of a model is its promised features. Just like other features offered on the MGs, the Indian-spec SUV will get the equivalent package. Cruise control, electrically adjustable seats are the musts. Besides, sunroof, high-quality touchscreen along with well-equipped connectivity techs are expected too.

It seems that MG SUV will get a premium interior packed with leather upholstery, bucket seats, soft touch plastic. With these goodies, the MG will not only competitive within their same-segment cars but also those from the segment above.

4. MG SUV aims at high safety 

MG aims at bringing in a highly-safe SUV. As a matter of fact, MG claims that theirs will be one of the safest cars in the segment. On China, MG has strictly followed the safety norm adopted by the Chinese government. And on entering the India market, MG targets on getting a full 5 stars on the BNCAP test.

5. MG SUV will have a competitive price

As far as we know, MG will be priced aggressively. Possibly, it will fall into the price range of around Rs 15 to 20 lakh. With all the promised features and techs, MG SUVs has a lot to offer within its price level.

6. MG SUV Engine Options: Diesel and petrol

MG SUV will be available with two engine options, one for diesel and one for petrol version. Its sibling Baojun currently offers two petrol engine options, a 1.5-litre and a 1.8-litre. It is still not sure what petrol engine will be brought toward the new India-bounded SUV.

For the diesel trims, MG has confirmed that it will be powered by a larger 2.0-litre motor. This unit is the same one packed under the Jeep Compass’s hood. But in MG SUV, the power output is still unknown. It could be expected to put out around 170-180bhp. An automatic gearbox will be available in both engines.

At first, MG will launch the five-seater version of the car. And a 7-seater might follow afterwards. The launch date is set to be in April 2019. MG also opens about the possibility of India EV. With all the attractive offers that it has, MG SUV will make a fierce rival to other premium SUVs like Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson or other popular SUVs Hyundai Creta, Tata Hexa, and Mahindra XUV500.
