The diesel variants of Jeep Compass equipped with a 2.0-litre engine have been called back for powertrain updates. Petrol counterparts are not affected by this campaign.

Fiat Chrysler India has recently announced a voluntary recall for the Jeep Compass owing to the emission non-compliance. Reports said that there are as many as 11,002 units of diesel-powered Jeep Compass manufactured between December 18, 2017, and November 30, 2018, have been affected by the silent recall.

Specifically, it is reported that the diesel engine powering the Jeep Compass SUV exceeds the permitted Particulate Matter Emissions (EPA) standard in certain cases. Though it does not affect customers in terms of safety, these non-compliant engines can cause great impacts on the country's air pollution as well as public health.

Having said that, the massive campaign will be kicked off in the first week of March in which all two-wheel drive models equipped with 2.0-litre diesel engine units built from December 18 of 2017 to November 30 of 2018 will be covered.

“This action is to correct production variations that may cause certain vehicles to exceed the regulatory threshold for particulate matter emission”, stated in the company’s official statement.

To curb the issue of emission non-compliance, carmakers and its dealerships will directly contact customers to arrange the appointments at the authorized service centres and workshops. Then, they will reprogramme the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) through the service computers so that the updated software will help rectify the PM emissions to meet with the mandatory emissions standards. Of course, the vehicles in availability will receive the upgrade as well.

“This software refresh takes around 15 minutes and will be carried out at no cost to customers. This is not a safety recall and the vehicle, as well as its occupants, are not at risk”, as confirmed by the carmaker.

The automotive company keeps the details of emission level exceeding the norms under the wraps. While such the recalls are normally seen in some other international markets for regular updates, it is still unknown that the updated software by FCA could touch on the vehicle’s total power output or fuel efficiency or not. In reality, Jeep used to conduct another recall on the Compass earlier to correct the loose fasteners but it also largely affected the operation of airbags.

The Jeep Compass has been the best-selling nameplate from Fiat Chrysler in not only India but also many other countries as well. In the Compass, the 2.0-litre diesel engine can churn out the maximum power of 170 bhp and a peak torque of 350 Nm units. It is also the only model to deploy a 6-speed manual transmission. An automatic diesel version of the SUV is also in the pipeline to come to us soon.
