Expected to be globally launched next year, the 2019 Chevrolet will also come to the Indian market in the coming time, but this time based on the forthcoming SUV from MG Motor India.

The Chevrolet Captiva was introduced to the Indian auto market in 2016, right before the company exited the market. Although Chevrolet has not operated in the Indian auto market for quite some time now, the new on this vehicle still appears in our headlines. Let us explain why. Since Chevrolet left India, the GM has taken over Chevrolet old shop, which leads to the fact that GM’s Halol plant was owned by MG Motors.  Chevrolet and MG Motors are owned by SAIC Motor in China. The SAIC also has another Chinese carmaker named Baojun. Interestingly enough, both the facelifted Chevrolet Captiva and the MG’s first SUV in India are also going to be based on the same Baojun 530 platform. Therefore, the upcoming new-gen Captiva will disclose some information about the first SUV of MG Motors.

Like the first SUV of MG Motors, the 2019 Chevrolet Captiva will be based on the Baojun 530

1. 2019 Chevrolet Captiva Exterior

The design and styling of the facelifted Captiva bear little resemblance to its predecessor; it will be more modern and come with a lot of sharp lines and fashionable design cues. It will come with the signature hexagonal grille of Chevrolet with an outstanding bowtie of the carmaker at the centre. The small LED headlamps contribute to its premium appearance, but the thick slat which extends the fog lamp cluster a little bit stuffs the front.

Despite being packed with some premium features, the 2019 Chevrolet Captiva front is a little bit busy

The side profile features a more sporty design. The new Captiva gets 18-inch alloy wheels. A panoramic sunroof also adds to the attraction of the vehicle. Considering the hot and stuffing weather in India, the sunroof, which is appearing on Indian luxury cars with an increasing frequency, is an advantage of this SUV. This helps ensure a comfortable travel for the passengers.

The rear contrasts with the front with some simple features such as rectangular tail lamps, dual exhaust system and a diffuser.

In terms of the dimensions, the Captiva will be 4,655mm long, 1,835mm wide and 1,760mm high (a little bit smaller, but higher than the outgoing model.

It is also expected that these aforementioned features will also be present on MG’s first SUV.

2. 2019 Chevrolet Captiva Interior

Not much has been revealed by MG Motors about the interior of the new SUV, but we have already known MG India is intending to pack its first SUV in India with some top-notch features, which will also appear on the Captiva as well. Some of the prominent features include

  • A new dashboard with dual tones of paint scheme

  • Free-standing 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system

  • Electrically-adjustable front seats

  • Front and rear parking sensors

It has been officially announced by GM that the new Captiva will be on offer in two options: 5-seater and 7-seater. Therefore, we can expect that the first SUV of MG will also be available in two versions: 5-seater and 7-seater, which are still unnamed.

3. 2019 Chevrolet Captiva Performance

The facelifted Captiva will receive the power from the 1.5L turbo petrol motor which can produce a max power of 147PS and a peak torque of 230Nm. This engine is also being used on the Baojun 530. In all likelihood, this engine will power the first SUV of MG India as well. Transmission duties are undertaken by a continuously variable and a 6-speed manual unit. The Baojun receives its power via a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission in China. All of these aforementioned transmission options are open to the MG India’s SUV.

As regards the diesel motor, the Indian MG SUV will be powered by a 2.0L unit. It is still open to question whether MG will offer only a manual option or an automatic version as well for its SUV. Nevertheless, GM has revealed that the motor will be the same as the diesel unit which provides power for the Indian Jeep Compass. Currently, the diesel version of the Compass has only a 6-speed manual gearbox, but once the Compass Trailhawk variant is launched in India, the 9-speed AT unit will also be added to the Compass lineup in India.

The outgoing model of the Chevrolet Captiva was on sale in India until 2016 and the facelifted model is being developed, but with a different badge of MG. The previous Captiva had a price of Rs 25.14 - Rs 27.36 lakh, but to maintain competitiveness, MG is expected to price its first SUV under RS 20 lakh. What do you think about the facelifted Chevrolet Captiva and the first SUV of MG as well as their prospects in India? Can MG Motors, with its new vehicles do the things that Chevrolet could not do in India. Let us know in the comment section below.
