During May 2020, Hyundai Creta managed to become the best-selling vehicle in the Indian market, beating its cousin Kia Seltos by a big margin.

Kia Motors India has had a brilliant run in the Indian car market, primarily because of its compact SUV, the Kia Seltos. Previously, the Seltos was the only car in Kia’s line-up in our country, but it managed to outsell every vehicle in its segment by a huge margin. Earlier this year, the next-generation Hyundai Creta was introduced in India with the hopes of regaining the best-seller crown in its segment. Now, it seems that Hyundai has finally managed to pull it off.

According to statistics, Hyundai managed to ship 3,212 units of the Creta in May 2020, managing to become the best-selling vehicle in India during that period. In comparison, Kia managed to ship a total of only 1,661 units of the Seltos and Carnival combined, which is almost half of the sales volume of the Creta! Although this seems like a promising win for Hyundai, this could be a temporary victory. As lockdown slowly lifts across the country, we might see finally see the change in the buying preference of customers which market experts have been anticipating.

According to industry analysts, consumers might now be willing to buy their own car rather than use public transport or cabs, as shared mobility does not allow for proper social distancing protocols to be followed. Personal mobility would thus see a surge, resulting in a consequent rise in car sales. According to recent surveys, a majority of car buyers have now reduced their budget for a new car, which leads market analysts to speculate that small passenger cars will become more popular. If true, the Hyundai Creta might struggle to maintain its sales lead in the future.

Due to the lockdown, automakers in India had to temporarily shut down their manufacturing facilities. It also prevented people from visiting car dealerships. These two factors combined to worsen the sales slump in the auto market, which had been persisting since last year. Although manufacturing facilities are now almost completely operational once again, carmakers are struggling to sell vehicles. Companies have also set up proprietary online purchasing thus allowing people the freedom to buy a car from the safety of their home. Although innovative, it would take time for the new online car buying model to gain prominence.
