2020 Mahindra Thar 4-door Version Imagined Digitally

Mahindra Thar has enjoyed a huge fan following in India, with it gaining a cult status among automobile enthusiasts. Its vintage, ‘World War II’ era looks have held the fancy of many SUV aficionados. The car was first launched back in October 2010 as a replacement for the Mahindra MM540. After a decade, the homegrown carmaker has finally decided to breathe new life into the car, in the form of a new generation.

While the 4-door Mahindra Thar is, at best, figment of imagination, it's for sure that the 2020 Mahindra Thar will be larger in dimensions than the outgoing model.

The car has been spied multiple times during testing now, and there are several pictures and videos of the next-gen Thar online. That, however, has been insufficient, as fans have torn through the entirety of the internet to find every bit of information available on the car. Below, however, we have a video by SRK Designs, which shows us a rendering of the upcoming car, but in a 4-door avatar.

In the video, we first see the outgoing model of the Mahindra Thar, standing in all its glory. As the next-gen Mahindra Thar is substantially bigger, the car in the picture is stretched in the middle, thus adding length and wheelbase. After that, details of the older car are removed and of the new one are added. Every detail, from the bold and wide fenders to the bigger cabin area, bring a muscular, butch appeal to the car, even more so than before. We can also see that the rear seats are forward-facing, instead of inward-facing like the current-gen model. Slowly and steadily, the car transforms into the car we expect to see in Mahindra showrooms all over the country in a few months. While the rendering is of a foor-door Thar, the vehicle will probably only be available in a two-door version.

There are plenty of details about the next-gen model that aren’t apparent in the rendering. Firstly, we have the new engine options. Mahindra is expected to bring in either a new 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine or update the same 2.2-litre diesel-engine to meet the new BSVI emission norms. Apart from that, there might also be a new, 1.5-litre ‘mStallion’ turbo-petrol motor, which would power the entry-level trim of the Thar. This would keep the car accessible to auto enthusiasts without being too heavy on the pocket.

There has been no confirmation on the launch date as of yet, but as the technical training of the staff for the vehicle is underway, we expect the car to be on sale soon. The expected price of the vehicle is between Rs. 9 Lakh to and Rs. 11 Lakh. Upon launch, it will compete against the updated Force Gurkha and the upcoming Suzuki Jimny (Maruti Gypsy).
