2020 Mahindra Thar will not make it to Auto Expo this time. That aside, we spotted one test unit in its production guise on test, and here are details of the exterior and interior
Mahindra Thar has been the most iconic product from Mahindra’s production line. It was based on the legendary Jeep DNA but the car has been discontinued for now as it failed to comply with new pedestrian safety norms. Due to this, Mahindra has been working over Thar’s successor. It is going to be a completely new car as Mahindra has been developing it from the ground up. That said, a lot has been already floating around the internet about the next-generation of Mahindra Thar. However, we now have some exclusive spy shots of the car, giving a clear picture of how the base variant of the car would be.
2020 Mahindra Thar has a more modern design approach in comparison to the car it replaces.
Thar carried the legacy of Mahindra’s classic Willy’s licensed product. It also generated a cult for itself as something really close to a classic, old-school Jeep, at least in terms of its visual appeal. However, that looked a lot like old Jeep CJ-45 and CJ-66, but if we go by the spy pictures of the next-gen Thar, it looks like it will be closer to the new-age Wrangler. The car in the pictures here can be seen with a typical Jeep silhouette. It has more modern bumpers, which will also satisfy the new pedestrian safety norms. The bonnet will also be compliant with the same regulations. The bonnet will have the retro-themed release mechanism, although, the clamps would be easier to use this time.
The test unit snapped in pictures had steelies and rock-slider like running boards giving the car some off-road ready equipment.
Some recent spy shots of the Thar had the test vehicle shod with alloys wheels, but this particular car had steelies and a running board below the door sill, which would also serve the purpose of a rock slider. The test car was spotted wearing a removable soft-top.
The gear knob tells that the car will a 6-speed gearbox with a lift to engage the reverse mechanism.
A look inside the car from its close windows gave a sneak peek of the dash wrapped in heavy camo. This time around, the car did not have an infotainment screen on the dashboard that further strengthened the fact it was a base-spec model. Although, there was a screen mounted on the co-driver seat, which was shedding a slight hint that this variant will ditch on an infotainment system, but will get all other electronic aids required on a trail.
Tail-gate mounted spare wheels gives the 2020 Mahindra Thar a proper SUV silhoutte.
In its current iteration, the Thar comes with a 2.5L CRDi engine, which produces 105bhp and 274Nm. Moving towards a smaller engine, the next-gen Thar will offer a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and 6-speed manual gearbox. The absence of a stick to operate the transfer case means that the next-gen Thar will come with a shift-on-fly mechanism seen on the Scorpio. However, to get a look at the Thar in its final guise, we will have to wait for some more weeks as Mahindra has announced that it will not be showcasing the Thar at the Auto Expo 2020.
