2020 Mahindra Thar is finally launched in the country. The prices start at Rs. 9.80 lakh for the entry-level AX trim and go all the way up to Rs. 12.95 lakh for the top-spec LX trim. Mahindra Thar in its second-gen avatar will be a 4WD layout as standard fitment across the range along with a low-range transfer case and mechanically-locking rear differential. There are two engine options to choose from – 2.0L turbo-petrol and 2.2L turbo-diesel. Both of these motors sport a four-cylinder configuration. While the petrol engine is designed to put out a rated output of 150 HP/320 Nm, the oil burner can dish out a maximum of 130 HP/300 Nm. The new-gen Thar comes with two gearbox options – 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT (Aisin-sourced). However, prices for the automatic variants aren't announced yet, but they are expected to be Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 1.60 lakh expensive than their manual counterparts.

In the second-gen avatar, Thar continues to get independent front suspension with dual-wishbones and coil overs with struts. However, the rear suspension now gets coil-overs too, which replace the leaf-springs seen on the last-gen model for the solid axle. Aiding the off-road capabilities of the new-gen Thar are its approach and departure angle which now measure at 41.8 degrees and 36.8 degrees, respectively.

The ramp-over angle, on the other hand, measures at 27 degrees, while it also gets a high water wading depth of 650 mm. Talking of the dimensions, the Thar is in its new-gen iteration is 3,985 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, and 1,896 mm tall. Also, it is the first-time that Thar gets forward-facing second-row seats with 3-point seat belts for the occupants.

This time around, Mahindra has loaded the Thar with a slew of features. The list includes brake-locking front axle, automatic climate control, lumbar-adjust for front-row seats, touchscreen infotainment system, front power windows, cruise control, steering-mounted audio controls, central locking, power-adjustable and foldable ORVM, satellite navigation and more. On the safety front, it gets dual-front airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability program, and tyre pressure monitoring system. Also, there are three different roof options on offer – fixed soft top, convertible soft top, and fixed hard top. While the entry-level AX trim gets 16-inch steel rims, the range-topping LX variant comes with 18-inch grey-finished alloy wheels.
