2020 Mahindra Thar Not Too Far from Market Debut

Mahindra has been working on upgrading its line-up for a while now. If it was not for the pandemic outbreak, the homegrown car manufacturer would have already launched a couple of new vehicles so far. Thankfully, now that the lockdown has been removed, Mahindra is expected to introduce the first of its upcoming vehicles, the 2020 Mahindra Thar, very soon. The new-gen Thar will be followed by the all-new versions of Scorpio and XUV500. 

As we all know, the second-gen Mahindra Thar has been under development for a couple of years. It has been seen multiple times in different locations across India. According to the latest updates, it appears that the new Mahindra Thar has reached its final stage of development and is getting ready for an imminent launch. In fact, launch of the 2020 Mahindra Thar was earlier scheduled to take place in the first month of the current fiscal but the unfavourable circumstances led to a delay in the introduction of the new vehicle. Now, however, it looks like the new model is merely a month away from launch. 

The all-new Mahindra Thar is developed around the baseline of rugged off-road design with affordable pricing and low running cost – all the key attributes that have pulled customers toward buying this SUV over the years. Moreover, with the launch of the new generation, Mahindra is planning to make the new Thar more upmarket and more premium to appeal to a broader customer base.

2020 Mahindra Thar will be the first of the upcoming Mahindra cars to enter the market  

On the inside, the 2020 Mahindra will feature some premium bits like touchscreen infotainment with Apple Carplay and Android Auto support along with a reverse camera, automatic AC, control-mounted steering wheels, hard-top and front-facing rear seats. In addition, the safety package of the Mahindra Thar will include ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors with camera, and dual front airbags.

The new Mahindra Thar is built on the revised version of the ZEN3 ladder-frame platform which is used on the ongoing Scorpio and TUV300. Moreover, it also comes with a new suspension system which is expected to improve the dynamics of the car. Under the hood, the 2020 Thar will derive power from a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine and a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine. While the former is a new engine which was displayed at the Auto Expo 2020, the latter was brought from the first-gen model. These engines are likely to be mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. A 4x4-drive system will come as an option.
