2020 Mahindra Thar Petrol Spotted Testing

Mahindra and Mahindra has been working on the new-gen Thar for a while now. The second-gen Mahindra Thar is one of the most important launches from the homegrown car manufacturer in present times. Ahead of the official launch, we have alraedy seen various test mules of the new-gen Thar on many occasions. Recently, the new Thar was spotted again during its road test. This time, more details of the Thar have been revealed through a short video.

The new video has given us a close look at the new Mahindra Thar. On the front end, the 2020 Thar comes with the familiar styling elements like round headlights and a seven-slat grille. As revealed in the video, the new grille will be larger than the one on the outgoing version. Moreover, it also receives new headlights, a modern iteration of the typical vertical-slat grille, revised bumper and more. In the side profile, the test mule of the SUV has been seen with 18-inch alloy wheels with disc brakes for the front and drum brakes for the rear. Even though dimensions are yet to be revealed, it appears in the video that the new Thar has gained some centimetres over the outgoing version.

Inside, the Mahindra Thar will be available with new features like floating touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, semi-digital new instrument cluster, and automatic climate control system.

Mahindra has not confirmed the engine specifications of the new Thar yet. Our best guess is that the new Thar will come with a 1.5-litre ‘mStallion’ engine, which is the same motor displayed at the 2020 Auto Expo. The 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is capable of making a maximum power of 165 PS and a peak torque of 280 Nm. If true, this engine will be the most powerful engine ever introduced on the Mahindra Thar.

2020 Mahindra Thar will be launched in a couple of weeks 

Along with the petrol engine, Mahindra Thar will also be offered with a BSVI-compliant 2.2-litre diesel engine. It is the same engine used on the Scorpio and XUV500. However, when powering the Thar, the engine will come in a different state of tunes. This engine is expected to deliver around 140 PS and 320 Nm. This engine will be available with two transmission options - a 6-speed manual transmisison and a 6-speed automatic. The latter will be another first for the rugged SUV.
