The 2020 Mahindra Thar is projected to have a global unveiling in late this year or at the Auto Expo next year.

We’ve already got in hands some good shots of the 2020 Mahindra Thar during its test mule on the Indian road recently. Particularly, unlike the earlier prototype of the new Thar that was spied testing with a dummy top hat, the latest test mule comes up with production body panels.

The 2020 Mahindra Thar was spied undergoing testing on the Indian roads some days ago.

As vigorous as the last time we saw the all-new Thar plying on the roads, the 2020 Mahindra Thar appears in a more modern bold stance with bigger proportions when compared to its predecessors. While the overall design remains as identical as the outgoing version, the front and rear bumpers should experience some major updates with a more generous utilization of plastic than before. The car’s side profile will sport a new door handles which are, as per the leaked images, placed lower for more efficient usage.

A set of spy images shows that the 2020 Mahindra Thar will come with more modern aesthetics than the outgoing model.

The rear deck is spotted in a higher position in comparison with that of the predecessors, albeit marginally, which causes courtesy of a smaller canopy in the vehicle. On the rear-end, the next-gen Mahindra Thar will continue to come with its traditional tailgate-mounted spare wheel together with a set of vertically-fitted tail lamps just like in the regular model.

The interior information of the second-gen Mahindra Thar is still scarce this time excepting for the conventional rear sideways seats due to be equipped inside the vehicle. It is also expected to be a well-loaded feature-rich cabin, better than we know in the current Mahindra Thar version. The new Thar will come as a considerably safer vehicle as well. Safety features should include airbags for both drivers and front passenger, standard to say the most, or else, optional to say the least. Besides, essential safety fitments such as ABS with EBD, speed alert, front seatbelt reminders and rear parking sensors will be standard in the model.

Performance-wise, the 2020 Mahindra Thar will derive the power from a single 2.0-litre oil burner mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Note that the ongoing Mahindra Thar offers two engine options for customers to choose from- a 2.6-litre engine making 63 PS of power and 195 Nm of torque and a 2.5-litre variant tuned for 105 PS per 247 Nm units. The new engine might come to produce a peak power of 140 hp and a peak torque of 300 Nm. Official debut is expected to happen by the end of 2019 or at 2020 Auto Expo. It is believed to carry a costlier price tag of around Rs 6.72- 9.49 Lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) because of the safety rules, emission norms compliance as well as the features updates.
