2020 Mahindra Thar Spotted Again Ahead Debut At Auto Expo 2020

It was announced earlier this year that the next-generation Mahindra Thar will make its first appearance at the 2020 Auto Expo. Ahead of its official debut, the Mahindra Thar was caught in camera again while undergoing testing. In the latest spy shots, the Mahindra Thar 2020 looks more refined with more production-ready details added. It was also seen sporting a new set of 5-spoke alloy wheels.

Exteriorly, the upcoming Mahindra Thar will feature a thoroughly-updated design. It is apparent that the new SUV will be significantly larger and bulkier than the previous model. In the meanwhile, the traditional design elements from the iconic Thar will be maintained. The boxy design along with the vertically-slatted grille, round headlights, and flat bonnet, will be kept unchanged. To the rear end, the new-gen version will keep the side-hinged tail boot lid, and the vertically-stacked taillights.

According to the previous spy images, the Mahindra Thar 2020 will get some major updates for the interior as well. The dashboard is slightly revised with a refreshed central console, steering wheel, and the instrument panel. It also gains a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility. One of the highlights of the new cabin is the new front-facing rear seats.

As per the available information, the upcoming Mahindra Thar will employ the same platform as the Mahindra Scorpio. The new car will also be built in accordance with the newly-adopted safety norms as well as upcoming regulations. It is also confirmed that the upcoming Thar will be offered in both soft and hard-top version. The spy picture above is of the hard-top version.

Under the hood, the 2020 Mahindra Thar will make use of the BSVI 2.0-litre diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 140PS and a peak torque of 300Nm. This engine will be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and there will be an optional 4-wheel-drive system on offer. Besides this diesel option, it is rumoured that Mahindra Thar might be offered with a petrol-automatic powertrain as well. The petrol engine in question is the 2.2-litre petrol motor that generates 150PS and 300Nm of max power and torque respectively, which also powered the XUV500 before being discontinued. The price of the 2020 Mahindra Thar is expected to see a significant hike over the outgoing model, adding Rs 1 lakh over the current starting price of Rs. 9.99 lakh.
