An all-new Mahindra Scorpio is likely to enter the market by the end of this year. The new SUV was spotted during a high altitude test in Manali, Himachal Pradesh, alongside a Mahindra Thar.

Last year, Mahindra had a huge success with the new-gen Mahindra Thar. To keep the momentum going, this year, the homegrown car manufacturer is working on upgrading other key products in their range. One of the models that are about to receive a major update is the Mahindra Scorpio. This SUV was recently spied undergoing a high altitude test in Manali, Himachal Pradesh. The test mule was seen being driven alongside the Mahindra Thar.

The new Mahindra Scorpio will share its platform and engine with the latest-gen Mahindra Thar

The four-wheel-drive version of the Mahindra Scorpio is not available anymore as it was discontinued back at the time of the adoption of BSVI emission norms. These spy shots suggest that Mahindra is about to reintroduce the 'go-anywhere' version. According to the spy images, the new Mahindra Scorpio will likely get bigger with completely new body shells. However, it still remains the tall-boy and upright stance from the previous version. On the spied images, the Scorpio will get a vertically slatted grille, twin-pod headlamps, wider front bumper, new fog light, and refreshed air intake design. For the rear end, the Scorpio is spotted with roof-mounted stop lamps, LED taillights and a side-hinged tailgate.

In terms of powertrains, Mahindra Scorpio will share the same powertrains with the existing Thar. It means that the Scorpio will carry forward a 152 BHP 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and the 132 Bhp 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine from the Thar. However, these engines can come with different states of tune on the Scorpio. The transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. 2021 Mahindra Scorpio sits on the ladder frame chassis that can also be found on the new Thar. Since this platform can support both a two-wheel-drive set-up and a four-wheel-drive system, it is possible that Mahindra will introduce a 4x4 drive system for the new Scorpio.

On the inside, the new Mahindra Scorpio will receive a complete makeover. Just like in the new-gen Mahindra Thar, the new Scorpio will be upgraded with better quality materials. One of the highlights of the new Scorpio is a large vertically-oriented touchscreen infotainment system on the dashboard. Other elements like steering wheel, gear knob, even instrument cluster might be borrowed from the Mahindra Thar. Just like the previous model, the new Mahindra Scorpio will be available with a three-row set-up. However, it remains to be seen what seating configurations will be available on the new Scorpio.

The all-new Mahindra Scorpio is expected to enter the market later this year. The price will start from around Rs 13 lakh. It will come up against the like of Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, newly-launched Tata Safari.
