The all-new Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is set to launch on 23 January 2019 and will come with a new design, more features, and a 1.2-litre engine option

The giant automaker, Maruti Suzuki has been working on the new hatchback model which is the next gen of Wagon R. This new model is scheduled to launch on January 23, 2019. Aiming at taking advantage of the tall dimension from its predecessor, the new Wagon R hatchback will soon be available in a wider, slightly longer and more substantial appearance. Let’s have a look at what this Heartect platform underpinned model will offer.

1. New appearance

The design of the Wagon R seems to get no resemblance with its predecessor or the outgoing Wagon R model. It comes as no surprise that the boxy dimensions have remained but every panel has been redesigned for a bolder appearance. Notable updates include the taller headlights which now wrap around the fender, lower bumper section painted in matte black, and sleeker wing mirrors. These details contribute to give the car a more premium look.

The boxy dimension as its current model has also remained

Similar to the Swift and new Ertiga, the new WagonR will also be equipped with a floating roof on the side profile.

2. Spacious Cabin

The interior, as seen in the spy images, will be offered with a dual tone finish for a premium appearance. The steering wheel comes from the Ignis and features audio controls. Moreover, the cabin looks roomier and more spacious than that of the predecessor. The top-spec trim will offer a touchscreen infotainment system.  Other highlights of the cabin include the upright seating position as well as the clever use of vertical space. The car now offers more legroom and shoulder room. Thanks to the larger seats and more boot space, Uber and Ola taxis shoud be now able to carry more luggage regardless of the presence of a CNG cylinder.

3. Four-cylinder engine

In terms of engine specifications, the picture has revealed that Wagon R would use the four-cylinder engine of the Ignis and the Swift. In particular, it is the 1.2-litre K12 engine that outputs 84 PS and 110 Nm. The 1.0-litre engine of the current car, which offers 68hp and 90 Nm will be also on offer. It will be sold even with optional CNG and LPG kits.

However, when running on gas, the outgoing model's 1.0-litre, three-cylinder model suffers from a weak bottom-end. Maruti Suzuki is expected to fix this problem with the launch of the new model. Both the petrol options will get an optional AMT.

4. Higher price

Due to the larger cabin as well as being better equipped, the new Wagon R variants, especially the variant with 1.2 K series engine will be positioned a lot higher than the current car. However, there is still a 1.0 K-series-powered version which should remain quite affordable. The prices are expected to range from Rs 4.5 to Rs. 6.5 lakh (ex-showroom). It will take on the likes of Hyundai Santro.
