718 Units of Maruti Gypsy In Spite of Being Discontinued - Here's How

Maruti Gypsy is an iconic two-door off-roader for good reasons. Commercially, the Maruti Gypsy has been discontinued in India for two years now, but the car is still going strong among the India Army. Impressed by its all-round utility and off-road capabilities, the Indian armed forces have been using the Gypsy for quite a long period. In the month of June 2020, 718 units of newly built BS4 Gypsy were supplied to the Indian Army by Maruti Suzuki.

The delivered units of the Maruti Gypsy are equipped with a BS4-compliant 1.3-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine claimed to deliver 80 BHP of max power and 103 Nm of peak torque. The SUV is packed with a standard 4WD system along with a low-range 5-speed manual transmission.

As we’ve reported earlier, the outgoing Maruti Gypsy fails to meet the updated regulation for the crash test and the stricter BSVI emission norms as it lacks almost all mandatory safety features like airbags, ABS, parking sensors and seatbelt reminder, etc.

The Maruti Gypsy (also-called Suzuki Jimny oversea) was launched for the first time in India in 1985 and it remained one of the long-serving cars before the company stopped its production in March 2019. While the Gypsy had been sold in the same avatar for the whole time, the Suzuki Jimny has witnessed several generation changes in 1998 and 2019. It’s worth noting that the latest-gen Suzuki Jimny was at the Auto Expo 2020.

Earlier, it was said that Maruti Suzuki had been planning to introduce the five-door version of the new-gen Jimny for India. However, recent reports suggest that the new-gen Gypsy (Jimny) is yet to be finalized.

In another update, Maruti Suzuki is set to bring in the 2020 Maruti S-Cross Petrol to the Indian market in later this month. The new S-Cross will share the same engine with its Vitara Brezza sibling and is anticipated to be priced from Rs 8.25 – 9.5 Lakh (ex-showroom).
