Under the newly-established alliance between the world-famous automakers, Maruti Suzuki and Toyota, an all-new C-segment MPV will be developed that will be sold by both the companies

The partnership between Toyota and Maruti Suzuki was announced last year. Under this co-operation, a slew of new vehicles is going to come into life. The very first Toyota-Suzuki product is the Baleno which is supposed to launch soon. Other than that, possibly, two carmakers would join hand in a project in developing C-MPV. This C-segment MPV will be co-developed by both Toyota and Maruti. This Toyota MPV will also be supplied to Suzuki later on. A report that appeared last month has suggested that the new C-MPV will take in monocoque construction, which actually diverges from Toyota’s top-selling MPV Innova Crysta’s body-on-frame architecture.

Moreover, as suspected, this MPV will be equipped with a full hybrid powertrain. The new vehicle is expected to go on sale in 2022-2023. To avoid a direct rivalry with the Ertiga and the Toyota’s MPV, the later will be positioned above the former.

Toyota and Maruti Ertiga

Toyota and Suzuki will work together to produce a new MPV that sits above the Ertiga

As a part of the new agreement, Toyota could develop their car at Maruti’s facility, using Maruti’s expertise. This collaboration is not limited to the Indian market. The two giant auto manufactures will further their partnership in the global stage. For instance, in the European countries, Toyota will provide EV versions of the Corolla Wagon and RAV4 to Suzuki. In return, Toyota will receive Suzuki’s compact petrol engines. Also, as confirmed by both, the re-badged Baleno, Ciaz, Vitara Brezza and Ertiga will go on sale in the African market as well. At the moment, Toyota is set to launch the rebadged Baleno first. Then comes the re-badged Vitara Brezza by 2022. From Maruti’s side, the Indo-Japanese automaker will work on developing its own Corolla Altis-based model. Besides, it also gains access to apply Toyota’s hybrid technology.
