Almost Half of All Kia Sonet Sub-Compact-SUVs Sold Have Automatic Transmissions

Kia Sonet was launched two months ago. As per the recent report, 46 percent customers of the Sonet choose to buy automatic gearbox.
Kia Sonet made its entrance to the Indian market back in September. The newest SUV from the South Korean carmaker has received positive initial feedback from the crowd. Within the first two months after launch, the Kia Sonet has generated over 50,000 bookings. At launch, Kia Seltos offers three choices of engines including turbocharged petrol, a naturally aspirated petrol and a diesel engine. As per the latest reveals from Kia, the diesel variants account for 40 percent of the bookings and the petrol and the remaining is for turbo-petrol and petrol option.

Sales breakdown also reveals that 46 percent buyers go for automatic gearbox and the iMT (intelligent manual transmission). Accordingly, the bookings for iMT gearbox take up 20 percent of the total number, the other 26 percent buyers opt for dual-clutch gearbox and 6-speed automatic transmission options. The majority of the bookings (54 percent) is for the manual variants.

The petrol engines on the Kia Sonet includes a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol and 1.0-litre turbo petrol. The former is capable of making 83 Bhp of power and 115 Nm of torque while the latter can belt out 120 Bhp and 175 Nm. The naturally aspirated petrol unit is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and limited to the lower variants only. The turbocharged unit comes with either a 7-speed DCT or a 6-speed iMT.

The only diesel engine on the range is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged unit. This engine is offered with two gearbox options, a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter unit. While the diesel-manual drivetrain can put out 100 Bhp and 240 Nm, the diesel-automatic gearbox is good for 115bhp with 250Nm. Notably, the Kia Sonet is the only car in the segment to come with diesel-torque converter gearbox combination.

In the first month of launch, Kia has sold 9,266 units of the Kia Sonet. Last month, the SUV has garnered a sales of 11,721 units, registering a growth of 25 percent compared to last month’s figure. Kia Sonet is now available at the starting price of Rs 6.71 lakh. The top-spec model can cost up to Rs 12.99 lakh.
