BMW released its congratulation video for the former Mercedes-Benz CEO after his retirement.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz are one of the most long-standing rivalries in the automobile industry. And the two companies are not shy from sharing their harsh roasts on the other. Currently, on the event of Mercedes-Benz CEO Dieter Zetsche’s retirement, BMW has released a Thank you video to the veteran CEO. After 13 years working as the Chairman of Mercedes Benz, Dieter Zetsche has retired, leaving not only Mercedes but also their biggest rival feeling thankful for what he has contributed during his long career.

Retirement is about exploring your wide open future

BMW’s new video documents the last working day of Dr. Zetsche as the head of Mercedes. The video shows the emotional last moments when he parts with colleagues and leaves the office in warm applause of the staff. On the last day as the CEO of Mercedes, after passing his badge and sharing his last moment with employees, reaches home in a black S-Class. The long journey he has taken ends in a high-class and elegant Mercedes. But it is not the end that BMW wants to lead their audiences to. Instead, the drive home is just the start of something delightful and the beginning of real freedom. As shown in the TVC, on the first day of his retirement, Dieter Zetsche steers out his driveway in a sporty, youthful and brilliant golden i8. Maybe he is “free at last,” as BMW delivers it.

BMW has sent out the lovely message to the man that has long stood at the other end of a long-standing competition between BMW and Mercedes,

"Thank you, Dieter Zetsche, for so many years of inspiring competition.”

In response to BMW’s Thank you video, Mercedes has replied via Twitter, saying:

“Thanks, @BMW for the kind suggestion – but we’re 100% sure he already decided to #switchtoEQ.”

Mercedes is mentioning the upcoming EQC 400, the first model in its electric EQC range.

After Dieter Zetsche’s retirement, Ola Kallenius will replace him and become Mercedes-Benz Cars

Zetsche started his lifetime journey with Mercedes since the first day of his career when he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in 1976 and joined the R&D division of Daimler, the mother company of Mercedes-Benz. In 2005, he became the head of Mercedes-Benz Car Group, one year later, the CEO of Daimler AG. Under his leadership, Mercedes had climbed back to the top. In the last seven years, Mercedes has led the international sales chart in five years while BMW has the largest share of sales in 2014 and 2015. Zetsche stepped down after 13 years at the helm, and his successor will be Ola Kallenius.
