BMW Vision M Next will first appear at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September this year.

The M performance division of BMW is working on the development of the next mid-engined car. It will be the third one of this kind, after the first M1 and the second i8. This highly-awaited sports car will be previewed as the Vision M Next Concept which is scheduled to debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Just likes its predecessors, the Vision M Next features the mid-engine setting. Plus, it will come with the plug-in hybrid-petrol powertrain. The same engine setting will be featured on other M performance models as well. Powering the Vision Next concept is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol motor.

The powertrain also includes two electric motors, one powering the front and the other for the rear wheels. This setting allows the drivers to select whether to employ rear wheel system or all-wheel drive system. If running solely on electric, the vehicle could provide a range of around 100 km.

The petrol engine along with the two electric motors could provide up to 591 bhp. At this power range, the new Vision M Next is twice as powerful as the current i8 which holds the maximum power output of 362 Bhp. About the speed performance of this car, the German carmaker claimed that it could run from standstill to 100 kmph within 3 seconds and could reach the top speed of 299 kmph, which is more capable than the current performance of the i8.

From the teaser provided by BMW, the Vision M Next Concept features a body-integrated kidney grille. The differently-coloured front and rear bumpers also hint the application of carbon-fibre. Notably, a convertible version of the car is also on proposal however, it is not known if this version will make it to the final production.

On the inside of the BMW Vision M Next, there is a new driver-centric cockpit system. It also has a ‘boost pod’ including a curved instrument screen, an augmented reality head-up display as well as a race-car-inspired steering wheel.

Sources from inside BMW suggests that the new Vision M Next production model will be limited. As soon as the second-gen i8 goes on sale, it will be discontinued. This rumour also indicates that the second-gen i8 will share some significant similarities with the production Vision M Next. The developing of the Vision M Next concept also marks the beginning phase of BMW’s Strategy One Next which targets to introduce up to 25 electric vehicles by 2025.
