BS-VI Fuel Is Now On Sale In Delhi

The BS-VI emission standards will take effect from April 2020, which require all the private vehicles on sale in the market to comply with the latest standards. To do this, a vehicle also has to run on BS-VI compliant fuel. Prakash Javadkar, Environment Minister informed the upper house of the Parliament that BS-VI fuel is now available in the state of Delhi.

Now, with the availability of the BS6-compliant fuel in Delhi, the process to make all the vehicles in India to comply with these new standards will become easier.

It has also been confirmed by Prakash Javadkar that all the vehicles sold in India from April 2020 will adhere to the BS-VI standards. Now, there are only a few cars on the Indian auto market conforming to the BS6 norms. The BS6-compliant Maruti Baleno was launched earlier this year. Other auto manufacturers are also testing their vehicles which comply with the upcoming standards and will launch these models in the coming time.

Noteworthily, Delhi, the National Capital of India, has been one of the most polluted cities worldwide. The more stringent emission norms are expected to bring down the pollution level in the city. The government has also been taking various measures to reduce pollution in Delhi. Many highways and bypasses have been developed to allow big vehicles like trucks to go through Delhi without entering the city region, which has proved to effectively diminish the pollution level.

After the BS-VI standards come into effect, the Indian auto market will experience considerable changes Firstly, the BS6 motors will lead to a slight increase in the price of vehicles. Secondly, there will be a remarkable decrease in the number of diesel vehicles on roads. The largest automaker in India, Maruti Suzuki, has announced that they will discontinue diesel motors once the stricter norms are introduced. Numerous other car brands will also partially follow Maruti’s example, stop the production of oil burners in their entry-level models. BS6-compliant motors have also started to be developed for Indian motorbikes, too.

The Indian government is also motivating electric vehicles in the country by making new tax benefits and subsidies for this type of vehicles available. All the sub-125cc two-wheelers are also banned from being put on sale in India to incentivize the usage of electric two-wheelers. Nevertheless, insufficient infrastructure has deterred the process to a great extent.

Hybrid vehicles can also serve as a more environmentally-friendly alternative to the traditional ICE-powered ones. Many under-INR-10-lakh vehicles will be offered with a hybrid system, which will help raise the fuel mileage and diminish the pollution level at the same time.
