With the BS6 update, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios diesel returns an ARAI-rated fuel efficiency of 25.1 kmpl. It is lesser than the what the diesel variant of the Maruti Swift used to return

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is the only car in its segment to be offered with 3 engine options. Of course, all of these engines are BS-6 compliant but is the 1.2L diesel unit which is the most fuel-efficient of the lot. The Nios has been recently updated with the BS-6 compliant version of the 1.2L oil burner and it now boasts of an ARAI-claimed fuel economy figure of 25.1 kmpl. With the transition from BS-4 to BS-6 era, engines have gained a little on the tech and have lost a little on the fuel economy numbers as well.

The new fuel-economy figure is lesser by 1.1 kmpl from what the BS-4 compliant mill claimed. This is all thanks to the new LNT (Lean Nitrox Trap) for this drop in the fuel efficiency numbers. These figures are observed with the 5-speed manual gearbox, not with the 5-speed AMT. The new fuel efficiency numbers are also lower than that of the diesel-powered Maruti Suzuki Swift. The Swift with its diesel engine returned a mileage of 28.4 kmpl. Sadly, the frugal diesel engine option on the Swift is now discontinued. It is only available with a 1.2L K-series petrol engine now, which returns an ARAI-claimed fuel economy figure of 22.0 kmpl.

Talking of the diesel engine on the Grand i10 Nios, it is a 1.2L 3-cylinder turbocharged setup. It belts out a peak power output of 75 HP and a max. torque of 190 Nm. It can be had mated to either a 5-speed MT or a 5-speed AMT. The power and torque outputs of this engine are similar to the fossilized diesel mill seen on the Swift. Other engine options available with the Grand i10 Nios are a 1.2L petrol and 1.0L turbo petrol. The former is a 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated motor with 81 BHP and 114 Nm on the tap. The latter, on the other hand, is a 100 horsepower 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. While the 1.2L engine is available with 2 gearbox options – 5-speed MT and a 5-speed AMT, the latter is only available with a 5-speed stick shift. Also, the 1.2L Kappa motor is available with an option of factory-fitted CNG kit.
