The Spring EV is a compact EV mainly aimed at consumers who travel mostly around the city. It looks to be a cheap and practical alternative to normal petrol-powered vehicles.

Dacia, Renault’s sister brand has launched the Spring EV in France at a price of 16,990 Euros, equivalent to Rs 14.72 lakh. If you think the Spring EV looks familiar, it is because it is essentially a Renault Kwid with an all-electric powertrain. Renault had previously showcased the Spring EV in India as the K-ZE at the 2020 AutoExpo. Dacia will be offering the Spring EV in three variants in France, namely the Standard, Business, and the Cargo which comes with 1100 litres of boot space.

Under the hood, the Renault Kwid’s ICE powertrain has been binned for an all-electric motor and battery pack for the Spring EV. The battery pack is a 27.4 kWh unit while the electric motor churns out 45 PS of peak power and 125 Nm of max torque. While these are not class-leading figures, the Spring EV can still deliver a respectable range of 305 kms as per the WLTP cycle within city limits. Expect a real-world range of around 230 km, which is more than enough as the Spring EV will be mainly used for driving within the city. The Spring EV’s battery pack supports fast charging as well, and it can be juiced up from 0-80% under an hour when using a 30 kW DC fast charger. If you’re using a 7.4 kW home charger, it will take around 5 hours to fully charge the battery. As a comparison, the Tata Nexon EV takes around 8 hours to charge between 20 – 80 % using a 15 Amp charging cable.

The overall design of the Dacia Spring EV remains very similar to the Renault Kwid, with the different company badges and the new front grille being the only notable changes. The rear bumper gets a faux silver skid plate and there are redesigned alloy wheels. Similarly to the Kwid Climber, there is a funkier version of the Spring EV which gets orange elements on the grille, ORVMs and doors.

A similar theme continues inside with the Spring EV’s dashboard largely the same as the Kwid, but it does get a new Dacia badged four-spoke steering wheel and a 7-inch infotainment system. The centre console has been cleared up for increased space and practicality. Renault had previously mentioned that they will be launching an EV in the country, which will be based on the Kwid’s CMF-A platform by 2022. However, that plan isn’t likely to come to fruition anytime soon as India still faces a shortage of proper charging infrastructure.
