Ferrari has won the International Engine of the Year with its F154 CB/CD engine. It is not the first time Ferrari has gained the title. In fact, this is the fourth time in a row that 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 is recognized as the best engine of the year, making it the most successful engine in the 21-year history of the award. Ford EcoBoost is the second most won engine with three wins, just after the V8 engine by Ferrari.

With the total grade of 425 points, the V8 Ferrari engine finished at a fair distance from the second-ranked electric powertrain from Jaguar Land Rover with 328 points. Following the Jaguar’s electric engine is Mercedes’s M178 4.0 litre V8. The electric unit is currently seen on the I-Pace while Mercedes’s 4.0-litre V8 is featured on the Mercedes-AMG. Ferrari's engine is widely used on various Ferrari’s models, including the 488 GTB, 488 Spider, 488 Pista and F8 Tributo.

Beside the most-appreciated title of the International Engine Of 2019, Ferrari’s engine also receives the Best Performance Engine as well as the first place at the Above 650 PS class.ferrari 3.9 litre twin turbo v8 engine

At this year’s award, the categorization is reformed. In previous years, nominees are grouped, basing on their displacement capacity. Accordingly, there were four sub-categories, Sub 1-Litre, 1-Litre, or 1.4-Litre. However, this year, the engines will compete with other competitors of the same engine output range. 12 new categories based on the measurement are established.

Ford 1.0-litre Eco Boost, the second most won engine, has beaten BMW 1.5 litre B38 three-cylinder turbo and PSA Peugeot Citroen’s 1.2-litre three-pot turbo to finish first in the sub 150 PS category. In the power range between 150 PS and 250 PS, Audi has shut out other nominees with its popularly-used 2.0-litre TFSI engine.

This year, contestants will rival in a revised award category system

The 250 PS to 350 PS category has called Porsche’s 2.5-litre turbo unit which powers the 718 Boxster S and Cayman S as the winner while the 350 PS to 450 PS band saw the champion of JLR full-electric powertrain. The JLR electric powertrain is also cheered as the Best New Engine and Best Electric Powertrain. It is expected to be a big name in the upcoming year especially when the rise of electric models is sure-fire.

The Mercedes-AMG M178 and Ferrari’s F154 BB are the winners in the 450 PS to 550 PS and 550 PS to 650 PS class, respectively. In the Hybrid Powertrain class, BMW i8’s B38 1.5-litre three-cylinder in its K15 guise is the number one.
