Ford will team up with Amazon to develop a built-in Alexa-enabled infotainment system to assist drivers inside the car.

In all existing Ford models, the infotainment system is powered by Microsoft Sync. To improve the performance of the system and leverage the comfort for the car users, Ford has recruited the help from Amazon Echo system. Amazon’s virtual assistant is no stranger these days. The voice of Alexa has been a trustful and helpful guide for many. And in the upcoming time, Ford will start to offer this state-of-art technology from Amazon on their cars. This move from Ford will be a game changer as the other models in the market are now powered by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Amazon Alexa is available across Ford's models in the US market

Delivering this tech into vehicles will require not only effort from the car manufacturer but also the collaboration with the manufacturer. Therefore, to make this technology available on a car's infotainment system, Amazon and Ford will team up to bring this hi-tech to production models. Sourcing the virtual assistant from Amazon will be a great shortcut for Ford, leaving it with an edge over other models. Some luxury car brands like Mercedes and BMW have attempted to develop their own system but none has introduced such goodies on their production model.

Ford will continue to run their infotainment system with Microsoft SYNC while the Alexa assistance will be available as a new feature on the current system. Moreover, one good news for Indian customers is that Amazon is expanding new language options to Alexa devices and, possibly, some India dialects will be added.

Ford is currently employing the SYNC3 system based on the in-house developed open source platform the Smart Device Link Software. This will allow developers to build their compatible application for the head unit. In-vehicle Amazon Alexa voice assistance will be developed the same way.

With the help of Alexa, car users could use voice to control tasks and other performance, for example, navigating and traffic report. Also, it could allow you to control smart home devices via the Alexa-enable head unit.

There is yet a confirmation from the manufacturer on which language/dialect will make it to the Alexa device, however, we could expect that this technology will be introducing among the existing India-bound models that are running on the SYNV3 infotainment system by 2020. However, before expanding new application in other markets, Ford will only provide the Alexa-based assistant on its motherland, the US market.
