The much-awaited 2020 Mahindra Thar is set to be launched in India for mid-2020. Let’s see how the second-gen Mahindra Thar performs in a short-drive ahead of its official launch.

Mahindra is set to launch the new-generation 2020 Mahindra Thar in the Indian market. Various spy shots of the new-gen Thar have cropped up online for quite a long time ahead of its launch, hinting at the exterior, interior and performance of the all-new off-roader. Recently, a Youtuber has managed to make a short-drive of the 2020 Thar to see how the iconic SUV accompanied by an exhaust note perform on the roads.

According to the video, the second-gen Mahindra Thar gets a better look than the first-gen model that it replaces. Powering the 2020 Mahindra Thar is a  2.2-litre four-cylinder mHawk turbo-diesel engine which can be seen under the hood of the Scorpio and XUV500. This engine comes coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission and is capable of producing 140 BHP of max power and 300 Nm of peak torque.

Being a tried and tested diesel motor that is known for returning high level of refinements. That said, the new-gen Mahindra Thar is expected to be more refined than the previous-gen version. The model featured in the video also delivers a pretty nice turbo whistle.

Sharing the body-on-frame architecture with the new-gen Scorpio, the 2020 Mahindra Thar is said to be stronger but lighter than the earlier model. The upcoming SUV will also feature a new interior and dashboard layout along with the infusion of safety essentials like airbags, anti-lock brakes and more. There will be a touchscreen infotainment system for the high-spec variants of the model while power steering and air-cons will be standard across the range.

The 2020 Thar will be equipped with forward-facing second row of seats, which will help improve the comfort for the long-distanced comuting. The new-gen Thar is even spotted with a factory-fitted hardtop that will be optional on the new vehicle.

Mahindra also confirmed that the company has been working on the petrol version of the 2020 Thar which will make a debut at a later date but it will be aimed for export markets merely.
