While Honda registered a growth of 8 percent in FY 2018-19, the Amaze was a key factor with a higher growth percentage than the entire industry

India is a country with a large rising middle-class demographic. Nowhere is this fact more visible than the sales of India’s compact sedan. While the Maruti Dzire is undoubtedly the king of the segment, the models which follow in rank each do sales of well over 5000 cars a month. A key player in this class is Honda’s mini sedan, the Amaze. While the first-generation of the Amaze came with a nice cabin, top features and Honda’s legendary reliability, it just couldn’t stack up against the ranks of the Maruti Dzire.

2019 Honda Amaze made its debut at the Auto Expo 2018. Today, it's popularity is second only to the all-conquering Maruti Dzire.

However, India has responded to the new second-generation Amaze and responded well they have. Ever since it was launch in May 2018, the model has been exceeding Honda’s expectations in terms of sales. The car past the 10,000 sales mark in less than two months and by the end of the year, had done more than 63,000 in sales. The Amaze broke the lucrative 9000 sales mark four times in 2018 and has continued to beat its own sales record in 2019. The sales of the Amaze grew 603 per cent in February 2019, compared to its sales the same time last year and last month had a total sales of 7,419 cars, a staggering growth of more than 936 per cent over last year.

The latest-gen Honda Amaze is a giant leap forward over its predecessor in aspects like interior quality and comfort levels.

While the Amaze has played a key role in growth of Honda’s sales in 2018, the company itself had a pretty good run last year with an annual growth of 8 per cent in FY2018-19. The company did sales of more than 1.87 lakh units as compared to the previous year’s sales of just over 1.70 lakh units. The highest monthly sales were undoubted that in the last month of the last F, with a total sale of 17,202 units and YoY growth of nearly 27 per cent. Those are astonishing numbers. The rise of Honda has boiled down to two other key factors which played a part. The first was the rapid expansion of Honda’s dealer and service networks which now stand at 381 outlets across 264 cities in India. The second is the return of almighty Civic, after a hiatus of nearly seven long years in our market. This was proven by the fact that the new Civic accounted for nearly 80 per cent of the sales in its segment, having launched just last month.
