Honda Civic, the World's fastest hatchback, now gets two more variants - Type-R Sport Line and Type-R Limited Edition

Honda Civic Type-R is currently the most powerful front-wheel-drive vehicle in the world. Now, Honda is expanding the Type-R line-up with two new entries – Type-R Sport Line and Type-R Limited Edition.

The Honda Civic Type-R Sport Line is the ‘subtler’ version of the Type-R Civic, and will only be available for the European market. This new variant does away with the massive spoiler of the Type-R, and instead uses a smaller, subtler, boot-hugging spoiler. The regular version, you might be aware, has a gigantic boot-mounted spoiler that stretches out high, almost as high as the top of the rear-windshield. In fact, it looks like an aftermarket fitment from the extremely popular 2005 game, Need For Speed: Most Wanted. While some people would prefer that, there are a lot of potential buyers who would prefer a relatively conservative look, especially the ones planning to use this as their daily driver.

The Civic Type-R Sport Line has gone through a few aesthetic changes as well. The interior is the same as the regular one, but gets a lot of the red-highlights removed. The on-board equipment list is also the same except for the new and better infotainment system. The front grille is now larger to allow for better cooling. The wheels are also smaller, 19-inch instead of 20, helping improve ride quality.

The Honda Civic Type-R Limited Edition is, as the name suggests, a limited edition version. There will only be 1,000 units built, 600 of which will be sold in the US and 100 in Europe. It sports new and lighter 20-inch wheels with stickier rubber, deleted rear wiper, new HVAC system, a larger front grille, redesigned front air-dam, and reduced sound insulation. Overall, the Limited Edition loses 25 kg over the ‘normal’ Type-R. It will only be available in the bright yellow paint scheme.

Honda Civic Type-R Sport Line and Limited Edition are both powered by a 2.0-litre inline-4 turbocharged petrol. It has 319 PS and 400 Nm of maximum power and peak torque respectively, which is extremely impressive. There is just one transmission option here, a slick-shifting 6-speed manual. The price of both the ‘Sport Line’ and ‘Limited Edition’ version is yet to be revealed. The regular Civic Type-R is priced at nearly $38,000 in the US, which roughly translates to Rs. 27.31 lakh.
