Honda Discontinues Civic Sedan In Its Home Country

Honda Civic is one of the popularly known sedans around the world. The car has completed around 48 years in the global market. While the new-gen Civic might not be that popular, the old-gen model still magnetizes a lot of enthusiasts with its sporty character. Right now, the Civic is in its tenth-gen and the sedan looks very flashy and modern. Honda Civic is a car that has changed the segment dynamics every time a new-gen model has been introduced. Interestingly, however, the automaker has recently discontinued the premium sedan in its home country, Japan, due to low sales. That’s quite shocking because in many countries, the sedan is still a hot-seller.

In India, we get it in a coupe-like sedan version, while in other foreign countries, it is offered as a station wagon and even a hatchback variant. There’s also a performance-oriented version of the car, which is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged i-VTEC motor. In the past few months, the sales of the premium sedan in Japan have remained under 2000 units.

In comparison, other Honda cars are performing pretty well in the home country. The discontinuation of Civic shows that not just India, but even other countries across the globe are facing low sales in the sedan segment. 

Taking about the mechanical specs of the Honda Civic, the India-spec model is powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder i-VTEC petrol mill, which puts out 140bhp of maximum power at 6500 rpm and 174 Nm of peak twisting force at 4300 rpm. Transmission duties on the petrol model are done by a CVT, while the oil-burner comes mated to a 6-speed manual unit. The petrol engine is rated to offer an ARAI certified mileage of 16.5 kmpl and the diesel mill offers a staggering 26.8 kmpl. The premium sedan is offered in three different trim levels, namely- V, VX and ZX. The price of the car starts at Rs 17.94 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base trim and goes all the way up to Rs 21.25 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the top-spec variant.
