Honda HR-V is a compact SUV that would fill the gap between WR-V and CR-V. It will be based on the same platform as the Honda Jazz/Fit.

Recently, there were reports that Honda is working on a new SUV for the Indian market. Now, a few models of Honda’s international compact SUV, the HR-V, have been spotted parked in the manufacturer’s Tapukara plant in Rajasthan.

Honda HR-V has been seen parked in company's Tapukara plant.

As can be seen in the images, four units of the Honda HR-V, three black and one red-coloured, have been standing at Honda’s facility. Out of these, only the red car is registered as a test vehicle, while the rest sit without any number plates. The presence of the HR-V indicates that Honda could be planning to bring this vehicle to India in the coming times.

Honda could be planning to launch the vehicle in India as soon as possible

Honda could set up a local manufacturing facility for the HR-V. This could help Honda’s export as well, since the SUV is an international model, sold in US and European markets as well. Earlier, the company had planned to set up an assembly plant and import the car in a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) fashion from Thailand, or even China (the China-spec version is called XR-V). However, the plan was shelved as the small number of vehicles planned for the import didn't make a feasible business case.

The HR-V could bring Honda the boost in sales it needs

Currently, the SUV segment is the most hotly-contested market space in India. The segment’s contribution to the overall sales is also quite significant for every manufacturer. Honda had previously tried its hand in the subcompact SUV market with the WR-V, which was quite a successful car owing to its premium features and relatively affordable price tag (for a Honda). The CR-V (and even BR-V for that matter), on the other hand, have fallen in popularity quite significantly. To increase sales, it makes sense for the Japanese Auto giant to introduce a new car that would close the gap between the WR-V and CR-V, thus giving people more choices within the brand.

There is no confirmation about when the car will go on sale in our country, although we expect the car to launch in 2021. The upcoming SUV will compete with the likes of VW T-ROC, Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson.
