Until now, Hyundai was reported to be planning to only assemble the Kona EV in India, via the CKD route from South Korea. Recently, it has come to light that the company could instead manufacture the EV at its Chennai factory

Hyundai Motor India Ltd is planning to invest Rs 7,000 lakh to upgrade its business, with a portion earmarked for the production of a pure-electric model. In all chances, this could be the Hyundai Kona EV that is bound to launch in our market. The company is even said to have confirmed that the manufacturing of the Hyundai Kona EV will start in the coming months followed by its launch.  Thanks to the investment, Hyundai Kona EV’s production capacity is expected to be increased from 7 lakh vehicles to 8 lakh units.

Commenting on the company’s plan, B.C. Datta, Vice President - Corporate Affairs, Hyundai India, stated,

“Kona will be launched in the second half of the current calendar year. The car can go up to 350 km per charge and the charging time is 60 minutes. The manufacturing will be geared towards domestic users but at a later point, we will look at exports.”
