As revealed by media reports, General Motors is likely to sell its facility in Pune to JSW Energy Ltd with a price of Rs. 3,500 crore for the latter to produce a brand-new EV priced at Rs 10-15 lakh.

General Motors made its appearance in India in 1996. After that, two manufacturing units have been established by the firm here to produce, sell and export vehicles. However, in 2017, its factory in Halol Gujarat was closed. Now, it is expected to exit India with the decision to sell the Pune facility to JSW Energy.

By now, the only remaining GM’s factory in India is located at Talegaon, near Pune. It has a total area of 300 acres and has a production capacity of 1,30,000 vehicles each year. At present, the plant has been producing the Beat hatchback for external markets. It has also been reported that the factory is priced in the range of Rs. 3,000-3,500 crore, including the cost of the engine and car assembly line as well as the land cost.

Nevertheless, this information has been confirmed by neither of the firms. In the meantime, the French PSA Group is also intending to purchase the factory. More interestingly, Gujarat plant is believed to have already been sold to MG Motor India by GM.

Given that JSW has mainly focused on power producing, its participation in the EVs segment will be a breakthrough for the firm.
