The facelifted MY2021 Malaysia-spec Kia Stonic comes with a mild-hybrid system and an iMT similar to the one that will be available on the upcoming Kia Sonet.

Being a subcompact crossover SUV, the Kia Stonic is available in many international markets. The South Korean automaker has even introduced an updated version with a new mild-hybrid system and an intelligent manual transmission (iMT) in Malaysia .Essentially, the iMT for the updated model works on the same basic principles as the one to be offered on the Kia Sonet. However, the Stonic gets a conventional three-pedal system, with the clutch pedal being offered as an option.

The MY21 Kia Sonet has been introduced in Malaysia.

The smart mild-hybrid system has been added to the 1.0-litre 3-cyl turbo ‘T-GDI’ motor, which offers two states of tune: 100 PS/171 Nm and 120 PS/171 Nm. Nevertheless, the torque figure of the 7-speed DCT version of the 120 PS version is 200 Nm. This motor is also mated to a 6-speed MT as well. The Stonic is also available with two other motor options: a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated 4-cyl gasoline burner which is mated to a 6-speed MT and a non-hybrid version of the 1.0-litre petrol motor which is mated to a 6-speed MT/7-speed DCT.

Noteworthily, only the smart-hybrid version of the Kia Stonic is offered with an iMT. The reason is that these two systems have been designed to work simultaneously with each other. The former uses a clutch-by-wire tech in which a sensor on the clutch pedal connects with the transmission control unit, which decides the amount of clutch action required. Like a normal mild-hybrid car, the Stonic also comes with traffic stop/start feature.

The clutch pedal on the iMT is optional since the TCY can work the clutch by itself without the need of the driver’s input. If the motor rpm decreases too much for the selected gear, the mild-hybrid system compensates for the power gap, which prevents the motor from stalling. If not, the transmission will disengage the gear and wait until the driver chooses a lower gear to move.
