Local Production of Suzuki Jimny (New Maruti Gypsy) To Start Soon, Launch in December

Maruti Jimny is likely to be launched in December. The production of the Jimny is likely to kick off in May.

In a recent report, there is speculation that Maruti Suzuki’s plant in Gurgaon will be responsible for manufacturing the Maruti Jimny. On the other hands, other sources claim that it is likely that the new off-roader will be produced in Sanand, Gujarat. Regardless of the production location, in all likelihood, Suzuki Jimny will hit the market by December this year as the new Maruti Gypsy.

Suzuki Jimny is enjoying growing popularity in its mother country, Japan. In Japan, the Jimny is manufactured in Kosai, Shizuoka. Two versions of the Jimny are made in this facility. The JB64W is made exclusively for the Japanese market while the JB4W are built specifically for the international market. Both of them features a three-door configuration and a standard part-time 4WD system. The main difference between the two versions is the size with the former being bigger.

In India, the Jimny is codenamed as YWD. The India-spec Jimny is expected to be a 5-door, longer version with the length measuring above 4000mm. In Maruti’s plan, there will be around 4,000 to 5,000 units of this off-roader to roll out of its manufacturing facility in India each month. The production of the Jimny (aka new Maruti Gypsy) will kick off this May. Apart from the Indian market, a number of the Jimny produced in India will be exported to other markets as well.

India-spec Maruti Jimny will be a five-door version

In Japan, the Suzuki Jimny JB64W is powered by an R06A 0.66-litre turbo three-cylinder petrol engine that generates a maximum power of 64 PS and a top torque of 96 Nm. In the meanwhile, the JB74W makes use of the K15B 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine. This engine manages to churn out a 102 PS of top power and 130 Nm of peak torque. Both versions come with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic gearbox.

In terms of features, the Suzuki Jimny comes with LED headlamps, 15-inch alloy wheels and 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation, Apple Carplay and Android Auto Expo 2020 as well as automatic climate control, cruise control, and rear privacy glass. There is no confirmation on what outlet branch, NEXA or ARENA will be in charge of the retailing of the Maruti Jimny.
