Lux meters will be utilized to measure the intensity of vehicle headlamps by the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) in Kerala with a view to reducing the number of accidents which are blamed on the too bright headlamps.

Utilizing lux meters to check the headlamps intensity is just one of various rigid methods which have been taken by MVD of Kerala to diminish the traffic rules breaking. The lux meters includes a photocell which captures light from the headlamps and then converts it into an electric current. After that, this electric current is measured to figure out the intensity. If the headlamps’ intensity surpasses the Automotive Industry Standard established by ARAI, drivers will be fined Rs. 1,000 and forced to change the headlamps.

The police report that headlamps which are illegally replaced or have high intensity are one of the main causes of the accidents at night since the opposite vehicles will be blinded. The Motor Vehicles Act has already recommended a power output for the headlamps of the vehicles; however, many cars in Kerala are equipped with over-bright headlamps.

Firstly, the MVD will use the lux meters to monitor vehicle in the southern districts of Pathanamthitta, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram and Pathanamthitta, which have the highest number of cars with illegal headlamps. Lux meters will also be provided for other districts across Kerala in the next weeks.

It is expected that Kerala’s new strategy of using lux meters to control vehicles’ headlights will help reduce traffic accidents, especially at night. Should other states in India also take the same measures, considering the high number of accidents on Indian roads each year? Share your thoughts with us in the comment section below.
