Showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo, the Mahindra Atom will likely revolutionise the quadricycle market by offering a zero-emission last mile mobility solution

In recent years, Mahindra has been very dynamic with its approach to cater to various sections of the Indian automotive market. The manufacturer launched a Pininfarina-designed MPV, and then a sub-4m version of the Ssangyong Tivoli as XUV300. However, the manufacturer recently showcased a quadricycle, which is a very new form of transportation and is in a very nascent stage. That said, this isn’t the very first quadricycle of the country, as that title belongs to Bajaj Qute. Mahindra showcased an electric quadricycle ‘Atom’ at the 2020 Auto Expo in a bid to showcase a green mobility option for last mile connectivity

The Mahindra Atom was showcased in a near-production form, though there wasn’t much revealed about the car by the manufacturer. But we do know that a quadricycle cannot have a power output of more than 15 kW and a top speed of 70 kmph. In comparison to the only quadricycle sold in India – Bajaj Qute, the Atom is far more spacious and offers a distinctive seating layout for 4 occupants. The car is designed with a minimalistic approach as it lacks any fancy design elements. On the front, it gets a flat van-like face with squarish headlamps and black plastic panel. The rear facet is also quite simple, but manages to look quite stylish.

The interior of the Atom follows the same theme of simplicity. The seating layout, however, is a little weird as there’s just one seat in the front row and a bench for 3-passengers in the second-row. The driver seat is mounted in an off-set manner. Also, the doors in the quadricycle are not mounted symmetrically. The right-hand-side door gives access to the driver seat only, while the left-hand-side door is mounted at a distance from the A-pillar to make rear seats easily accessible.
