Mahindra will raise the price of all passenger vehicle by up to Rs 36,000

Mahindra cites the implementation of the new AIS 145 Safety norms as the major reason for the upcoming price updates. According to the new regulations, all vehicles are required to be equipped with the following features: speed alert system, driver and co-driver seat belt reminder, and driver airbag. Sharing about the price updates decision, Rajan Wadhera, President of Mahindra and Mahindra automotive department, declares Mahindra’s emphasize on the safety of the vehicles and how the upcoming safety norms unavoidably affect the price.

“At Mahindra safety has been at the core of our product development process and we welcome the regulatory requirements relating to safety upgrades. However, the safety regulatory requirement has led to some cost increases.”

The addition of required safety features is the major cause for the price hike

Mahindra will introduce a substantial price hike on the SUV range, including the Scorpio, Bolero, TUV300 and KUV100 NXT. In the meanwhile, Mahindra XUV500 and Marazzo will receive a marginal price hike.

Besides the new safety norms, the BSVI emission regulation is also approaching. Mahindra will upgrade its current power range to meet with the new standard. Besides, it will also axe its smallest diesel engine, the 1.2-litre diesel on the KUV100. The new emission standards will be implemented from April 1 2020. The engine updates will lead to an increase in price. Maruti Suzuki is the first carmaker to launch BSVI-compliant vehicles in the market with the Wagon R and new Swift. The price of these vehicles is expected to rise too.

Mahindra recently launched the Mahindra Thar 700 at the price of Rs. 9.99 lakh which is more expensive than the ongoing entry-level Thar variant by Rs. 50,000. This special edition comes with ABS but lacks parking sensor, driver airbags, and passenger seatbelt.
