M&M is on considering to produce new electric hatchback and mid-sized sedan after building a premium brand name in terms of electric vehicles in general.

As for the electric vehicles, Mahindra & Mahindra is the only automaker in India holding the very large market share. To penetrate deeply into the auto market, Mahindra is planning to develop an electric hatchback and a mid-size sedan.

At the very first stage, Mahindra will join hands with its Italian design house which is Pininfarina to produce the hatchback on the electric powertrain. Mahindra explained that an electric hatchback would be ideal for the shared mobility sector in India.

Additionally, it might approach the Ford brand for the mid-size sedan as well. This sedan is likely to base on the Figo platform. Mahindra has currently unveiled the eVerito electric sedan in its portfolio. However, developing it further to meet future requirements would need additional investment.

The project of producing both electric hatchback and sedan would acquire Mahindra an investment of around $110-120 million. This also means that Mahindra would have to pump in around huge investment with this hatchback producing plans.

Moreover, the investment amount might get double if the total cost includes the overall process of electrifying products which are three-wheelers, SUVs, and buses along with the investment in battery manufacturing facility and localisation of parts.

Recently, Mahindra has made the debut for commercial electric vehicles as an electric three-wheeler which is mini load carrier named the Supro and a range of electric buses. It can be explained by the fact that many big auto names as Hyundai, Toyota, Tata and Maruti are planning on entering more in the electric vehicle market, hence, Mahindra wants to hold the ground.

Apart from the new electric sedan and hatchback, Mahindra also schedules to launch the electric version of the KUV100 which is known with the codename S110. It will be followed by another electric compact SUV based on the platform of SsangYong codenamed as S210.
