The production of Mahindra e20 is said to have been ceased as its manufacturer decided against upgrading it to meet the stringent norms

First launched in March 2013, Mahindra e20 was among the first faces to venture the EV segment. Later on, in 2016, it was replaced by the e20 Plus. Admittedly, e20 Plus was of the rare electric vehicles available right now in India and also the most popular EV in India. That’s said, the e20 fails to capture stable sales figures. Given the expected rise of new EVs in India, it is best that Mahindra has a fresh start with a more modern rival. The discontinuation of the e20 for the domestic market is confirmed by Mahesh Babu, chief executive at Mahindra Electric.

Mahindra e20 Plus will be replaced by a new EV from Mahindra Electric

At first, the e20 Plus was on sale with four variants, including the P2, P4, P6 and P8. The model could deliver the highest range of 140 km on the top-spec P8 while the rest is good for 110 km. However, now, it ends up with only three variants, P2, P4 and P6 on sale. The higher-ranged P8 was excluded from the line-up.

On the standard variants, on average, it takes seven hours and 20 minutes to get the e20 fully-charged through the 16 Amp single phase socket. The charging time could dwindle to only one hour and a half if charged through the three phrases 32 Amp charging port.

Mahindra has a lot of experiences in the world of EVs in India, all starting with the e20. As the segment is beginning to heat up with many other manufacturers planning to launch its EV models, it is the right time for Mahindra to take the next step. It also means that Mahindra has to bid a farewell to its ageing e20 and move on with more current models with the latest technology.

The new page for Mahindra electric range will be marked by the new Mahindra eKUV100 EV which will go on sale later this year. It will be followed by another vehicle which is the electric Mahindra XUV300. These models will come with better practicality and larger size as well as a higher range. With the KU100, it will exert power from a lithium-ion battery pack and a 30 kW electric motor. This EV is likely to get the range of 140 km which is on par with the top-spec e20 P8. With fast charging technology, it would charge 80 per cent of the battery for less than 60 minutes. It is expected that Mahindra will propose the range of around 350 – 400 km on the Mahindra XUV300, which is significantly higher than the range on the discontinued e20.

Mahindra’s new range of EV will take on the Tata Altroz EV, Maruti WagonR EV, and Hyundai Kona EV.
