Mahindra and Ford have decided to further penetrate into the SUV segment with 4.2 - 4.3-metre long SUVs underpinned by a shared platform.

Ford has recently been paying a great deal of attention to UVs on a global scale. Among numerous models which are currently being developed, the one of most interest is a compact SUV which will make its way to India. Codenamed B745, the SUV will be underpinned by a brand-new platform and will measure around 4.3 metres in length. The new upcoming Ford Compact SUV will soon participate in the fiercely competitive SUV segment in India, currently dominated by Kia Seltos, MG Hector, and Hyundai Creta.

The B745 chassis will also underpin the Mahindra XUV400 (codenamed S204), to which the domestic automaker has given the green light for production. Entering a joint venture in India, Mahindra and Ford will develop products for the Indian auto market together. The XUV lineup of Mahindra, including the XUV300 and the XUV500, features monocoque body and an FWD system; the new XUV400 is expected to adopt this basic architecture, too.

While the Ford B745 and the Mahindra S204 will be underpinned by the same platform, the two models will have differences in terms of their appearance. This approach will also be adopted for all the future models which are developed under the joint venture by both the companies. The interiors of the two vehicles will also come with different features with a few shared ones like the infotainment systems. The SUVs will be on sale at the two companies’ respective dealerships.

Ford and Mahindra aren't the only ones developing new entries for the SUV segment in India. Other auto manufacturers such as Maruti and Toyota are also developing a new SUV platform, which might be shared between the two. Skoda and Volkswagen will also introduce their SUVs by 2021. The new-gen Hyundai Creta is also set for a launch in early 2020. As such, you will have a wide variety of SUV options to choose from in the coming time.
