Last month, the Mahindra XUV500 witnessed a historic victory over the Jeep Compass in terms of sales number with the gap being more than double.

Specifically, 2659 units of the Mahindra XUV500 was sold whereas the sales figure of the Jeep Compass was only 1267 units in January. The two SUVs have competed with each other since the Jeep Compass was launched in India. More interestingly, XUV500 outsold both the Jeep Compass and the Tata Hexa since Tata managed to sell only 309 units of the Hexa SUV in the same period.

This result is quite surprising since, in December 2018, the Compass minimally outsold the XUV500 with 1150 units sold for the former and 1141 units for the latter. Mahindra witnessed a 133% growth in the sales of the XUV500, a big achievement for the domestic auto manufacturer. This dramatic sales increase can be explained with many reasons: prices, discounts, auto buyers’ interest, etc.

The Mahindra XUV500's sales far surpassed the Jeep Compass last month

The first and foremost contributing factor to the success of the Mahindra XUV500 is its pricing. The XUV500 is priced in the range from INR 12.72 lakh for the base variant to INR 19.48 lakh for the top option. On the other hand, the Jeep Compass is more expensive with a price of INR 15.39 to 22.90 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom, Delhi). The difference in prices of the base variant and the top variant between the two SUVs are INR 3.33 lakh and INR 3.42 lakh, respectively, which are a huge amount for the Indian auto buyers, most of whom are well-known for being price conscious.

The first reason for the better performance of the XUV500 than the Compass is the forme's low price

Another compelling reason for the good performance of the Mahindra XUV500 is the discounts that it offers. As mentioned before, the Indian auto buyers are very conscious of pricing; therefore, no wonder they prefer better deals with the home-grown automaker which offers discounts of up to INR 64,000 on the XUV500. The Jeep Compass’s target customers are the young, so the American automaker focuses more on equipping the SUV with better engines and a top-notch cabin. On the other hand, the XUV500, with a reasonable size and price, attracts more sensible auto customers.

January was a successful month for the Mahindra XUV500, but it remains to be seen whether it can maintain a stable performance this month. The new-gen Mahindra XUV500 is being developed and projected to go on sale next year, but before that, the recently launched Tata Harrier, the upcoming MG Hector and Kia SP based SUV in the coming time will make the Indian SUV segment larger than ever before.
