Maruti Alto Celebrates 20 Years in India, 4 Million Units Sold

This August, Maruti Alto has reached the milestone of 40 lakh units sold. It is estimated that 84 per cent of Alto customers are first-time buyers.

Maruti launched the entry-level hatchback, Maruti Alto, 20 years ago. The hatchback has always been one of the best selling vehicles in the Indian market. Within two decades, Maruti Alto’s sales volume has surpassed the 40 lakh unit mark, according to the latest announcement from Maruti Suzuki.

The budget hatchback from Maruti has been a go-to option for the first time buyers in India. It is revealed that the majority of the Maruti Alto buyers chooses the Alto as their first-time cars. During its existence in the market, Maruti has continuously developed and upgraded the Maruti Alto to keep up with the market trend as well as the government’s standards. The continuous improvement of this model has managed to keep the Alto’s relevance to car users.

Maruti Alto made its debut at the beginning of this millennium. It took this hatchback four years to climb to the first position in the car sales chart. And in the last 16 years, the Maruti Alto has remained to be the best selling model in the market. The hatchback reached the 10 lakh units sale landmark in 2008. Just in four years, the total sales of the Maruti Alto increased to 20 lakh units. In the next eight years, the sales figures of the Maruti Alto has doubled. In August, Maruti Suzuki announced that it has retailed over 40 lakh units of the Maruti Alto.

In the current financial year, the sales breakdown shows that 62 per cent of Alto sales is from the upcountry. Besides, a part of Maruti Alto’s sales come from the other countries where the hatchbacks are exported to.

Maruti Alto is retailed via the Arena showroom network across the nation. The outgoing Alto is powered by a 0.8-litre petrol engine. A CNG version is also on offer. Maruti Alto is currently priced from Rs 2.94 lakh to Rs 4.36 lakh (ex-showroom).
