Maruti Baleno and Brezza Help Toyota Sail Through Tough Times

Toyota has been selling a handful of products in the Indian market ever since the BS-6 emission norms came into effect, as the Japanese carmaker had to discontinue to some of its offerings. Currently, Toyota’s lineup in the Indian market comprises of Glanza, Urban Cruiser, Yaris, Innova Crysta, Camry, Vellfire, and Fortuner. Talking of the sales figures, the carmaker has been averaging at around 8,000 units every month with a market share of roughly 3 per cent. In the month of November, however, the carmaker managed to sell a total of 8,500 units, which is higher than the 8,312 units sold in the same month last year. This comes up as a YoY growth of around 2 per cent. Helping the carmaker secure these figures are the Maruti-sourced Baleno and Vitara Brezza.

Maruti Baleno and Brezza Help Toyota Sail Through Tough Times

Toyota sells the re-badged version of the Maruti Baleno and Vitara Brezza in the Indian market as Glanza and Urban Cruiser, respectively. While the exact sales figures of both of these models are not yet known, they have collectively managed a sales figure of over 5,000 units. Also, the recently launched Innova Crysta facelift is receiving a strong response from the Indian audience.

The Glanza being a re-purposed iteration of the Maruti Baleno, it comes with a better warranty with the Toyota badge. It is priced at Rs. 6.98 lakh, which is higher than the Baleno’s Rs. 5.64 lakh starting price. However, the Toyota Glanza offers more features as standard fitment across the range than the car it is based on. Talking of the engine options, it can be had with either 1.2L K12M motor or 1.2L K12N Dualjet engine. The former of the two produces a peak power output of 83 PS, while the latter dishes out 89 PS. The torque output on these engines remains identical at 113 Nm. The transmission choices include a 5-speed MT and CVT.

The Urban Cruiser, on the other hand, is propelled by a 1.5L K15B motor. It is the same unit that does duties on the Vitara Brezza and pushes out 105 PS against 138 Nm. The Urban Cruiser can be had mated to either a 5-speed MT or a 4-speed AT. The prices for the Urban Cruiser start at Rs. 8.40 lakh, which is almost a lakh higher than that of the Maruti Vitara Brezza.
